Breaking barriers between genres was a huge step in the music industry and taking two musical groups, one moving up in the hip-hop scene and another falling out of the limelight, was a smart move from music producer Rick Rubin.

I am a fan of hip-hop and rap music. I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea here, but the art there is within the lyrics as well as an art to music mixing production. Branching rock music into hip-hop makes sense to me. Both styles of music really lend to each other similar musical concepts, it's just different in how cultures have adapted the style.

Anyway, this was a fun reaction to do and it made me realize how much I don't know about AEROSMITH. Hah!

Well, first in '86 Aerosmith was considered by many to be "washed up". The album they released prior to this "Done With Mirrors" was not a huge commercial success. The Aerosmith album that followed however, Permanent Vacation was a smash. The only 2 Aerosmith members who helped with this collab were Steven Tyler and Joe Perry - the other members did not make the trip to record. Ironically neither band was terribly hot on the idea of doing this. Joe's guitar in the RUN DMC version is very staccato ... and believe it or not Steven Tyler sounds exactly like this IRL without filters or effects. The RUN DMC version charted at number 4 on the Billboard hot 100, higher than the original version and became RUN DMC's biggest hit.

The song was basically a rap in its original form already, with one of catchiest guitar riffs ever. NittPicc, I'd recommend adding Aerosmith's 1975 album Toys In The Attic to your library. There's not a bad song on it- they range from good to great, including Classic Rock radio staples "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion". Hip Hop had been developing since the '70s, but it wasn't really visible to the mainstream until the early-mid 80s. Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight" came out in 1979. In NYC rap and rock were already being mixed prior to the RUN DMC/Aerosmith collab. RUN DMC's "Rock Box" (1984) has a good portion heavy rock guitar. The Beastie Boys started out as a Punk band, but began to incorporate Rap into their act around the same time '83-'84. In '87 NY based thrash metal band Anthrax would release the song "I Am The Man"- thrash/rap mix in the comedy style of the Beastie Boys, thus laying the groundwork for the rap/metal, nu-metal genres. But I think the first notable example would be the 1981 song "Rapture" by Blondie which is a mix of rock/disco/hip hop and rap. It's the first #1 single to feature Rap.

In addition to bringing Rap to a mainstream/rock audience, this song also put Aerosmith back on top. They hadn't had a single break the Top 40 since 1976's "Back in the Saddle". Their next effort was the blockbuster album Permanent Vacation (Rag Doll #17, Dude Looks Like a Lady #14, and Angel #3) *the song you're thinking of is Violent Femmes - "Blister In The Sun" (1983) ** if the item is already in a nice square/rectangular box, I will wrap it and tie a nice ribbon/bow around it. Otherwise... bag it. It's easier to carry, especially if your arms are full...plus they are reusable.

So, are we getting an old school Aerosmith request soon?

I did not currently have anything in mind ... but we could ... any thoughts you can always throw them in. I just asked for some Beatles :p .

NittPicc indicated she only knew "Dude Looks Like A Lady" (from Mrs. Doubtfire) and "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" (from Armageddon). Plus, the intro to the video game had a loop of "Rag Doll". I swear in the past she mentioned knowing "Sweet Emotion" too. I'd vote for anything off Toys In The Attic, but maybe start from the beginning "Dream On'?

Jim Lynch

You want me to do it?????? HOW DARE YOU?!?!?!?!?

Jim Lynch

Dream On would be my choice as well, but it's just as tricky as some of their other songs. It's been trickled into so many movies, TV shows, and commercials that I'd be surprised if she hasn't at least heard portions of it. It would still be worth a shot at some point though.

This was such a fun collab and a really cool video! I remember when Walk This Way first came out and it was funny that younger kids thought that it was Aerosmith cutting in on Run DMC, LOL! Um, no, Aerosmith did it first, but this was a fun rehash of a great song. When the original first came out, I thought they were singing "Lost his Wang," which to a teenage boy, was hilarious! I was a bit disappointed to find out they weren't singing about somebody losing his wang. LOL!

Charles Coleman

Toys in the Attic perhaps? I love that song!

Charles Coleman

Yep. Good call on Blister in the Sun. You beat me to it
