I would love to more projects like this but with more research, a script and better editing. It's fun to learn about band's their musicians and how the band came about, how the music was made and where are they now.

I still cannot believe that Boston was basically a "one man" band. There are other artists out there like this right? Surely.Sources:Boston on WikipediaMIT Technology ReviewGonna Hitch A Ride Fan SiteAlbum Liner Notes

Great reaction! In the words of our wonderful reactor here I think this project provided “too much fun”. There are reasons you will never see a Boston song “remixed” or “remastered” – well, I did find one but didn’t listen to it ... because Tom Sholz is a genius musician AND studio engineer ... no one would dare remix his recordings. Boston through the first 2 albums was 2 people ... Brad Delp who sadly took his own life in 2007, on vocals, and Tom ... effectively on everything else except drums (Sib Hashian, RIP). He played all the instruments and mixed everything himself in his basement studio that he built. If an effect he wanted was not available, he "MADE" it. The last count I had was 36 patents for musical effects, recording, and mixing devices. He is a degreed MIT mechanical engineer (well noted by Nittpicc). When listening to BOSTON and you ask “how did they do that?” the answer is most likely Tom Sholz. Tom was responsible for packaging his sound so others could buy it in the Rockman effects box. The Rockman brand and its associated inventions were sold to Dunlop Manufacturing (Jim Dunlop) in 1995. As NittPicc would say you can hear the return of material 3 times in this song … where everything drops out except for hand claps and guitar. Only the third time, where electric and not acoustic guitar is heard … THAT guitar sound is the quintessential BOSTON guitar effect that everyone wanted, but no one could get until Tom brought the Rockman to market. It’s heard in many places in the song and on the album, but the spot I have highlighted it is heard in isolation. Brad’s story is sad, a victim of depression and suicide. According to the medical examiner, his death was the result of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, pronounced dead on March 9, 2007 (aged 55). All the vocals heard are from the golden throated Brad Delp as he tracks over himself and also brings the harmonies … it’s all him. Brad had left the “band” in 1988 but rejoined in late 1994. All the songs on the album were effectively early demo tapes that no record company wanted. On what was considered a final attempt Tom finally got someone to listen at Epic Records. In 1976 there was a multi-member band assembled that could play Tom’s music so they could tour … but it does not change the fact that the “BOSTON” most people first heard was some engineer noodling around in his basement and one singer with a multi-track recorder. guitar_andy and I started an interesting discussion on the DISCORD wondering and comparing the recent AI bands and BOSTON as they are both “pretend” to a degree. Is BOSTON really the first AI band, if you will? The instrumental intro "FOREPLAY" was the very first song Scholz ever wrote, but recorded on his 2 track machine in his basement in 1971. – LONGTIME was written while he was at MIT in 1969. The two were smushed together into one inseparable mass on the album. The debut album, Boston, released on August 25, 1976, ranks as one of the best-selling debut albums in U.S. history, with over 17 million copies sold. Every song on the album got airtime and all were hits. Thinking … 2026 will be the 50th anniversary of their debut album The fact that the original BOSTON is not an actual band with members probably explains why its not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame … or not. Maybe its just stupidity 😉 .

Would definitely like more of there. Helps that you started with my favorite band from my teen-hood LOL

From what I remember reading some years ago, Tom hired drummer Jim Masdea to help him develop the songs that would eventually be on the first Boston album, and I think they spent years working on them. Then when he got the record contract, he put the rest of the band together (with a different drummer, I believe). Then unbeknownst to the record company, Tom mostly made the recordings in his home studio instead of a "professional" studio. The one exception being the last song on the album "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" being recorded by the band in a regular studio (and this was always my least favorite track on the album).

The supplemental video you showed here is the exact one I was going to share on Discord. 🤣 👍👍👍 Other albums that have been recorded using the Rockman and other SR&D (Scholz Research & Development) components: Megadeth - Killing Is My Business...and Business Is Good! (1985) Def Leppard - Hysteria (1987) Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien (1987)

HO HO HO.... Megadeth and Def Leppard are part of my youth. I'm still listen to Megadeth every day.
