I didn't want to give Lakan any part of my heart. If Maomao didn't like him, then I didn't want to like him, and Jinshi seems to dislike him so I was willing to jump on that bandwagon.

...but this episode really broke my heart.

C I N E M A !. Masterful twist from the author. Lakan has a condition named "Prosopagnosia", for that he doesn't recognize human faces....but he sees Fengxian and Maomao's faces. His most important people in the world. Nittpic. Did you catch that Luomen, Maomao's adopter father is really Lakan's uncle?. Another absolute cinema awaits us in the season 1 finale!. Get ready those tissues.

Don't worry, your not the only one being tricked by the show about Lakan. The show and story was written so you don't trust him and find him sus, even when he talk himself about the verdigris house and the courtesan in Jinshi's office the first time, he said he wanted to force himself to her, so that sounded already bad, but with this episode and the context now, it's not as bad as we have thought. Fengxian offered him to chose chess or go to play, knowing damn well that Lakan didn't loose a single chess match against her, but lose every go match. So if Lakan chose chess, HE would have been the one what he wanted from her, but he choose go to let her win and let her take something from him, but at that time, they both loved each other and whoever was the winer, will have asked for the same thing. So even if Lakan would have chosen chess to "force" himself, both wanted it anyways. Now, with knowing that Lakan loved Maomao's mom, and love his daugter very much, some prior scenes have another layer on it. Remember when Maomao run to save Jinshi, was hitten by a guard but stood up and continued anyways ? Lakan helped her, because he love his daugter but he was also very angry that she was hurt and when Jinshi goes out of the temple with Maomao passed out in his arms and bleeding, you can see the shock and concern on his face. He was always described as a weirdo and a creep, someone that you won't have as an enemy, but in Maomao's case, hurting her would make him your enemy, he would do everything for her. Exemple, coming from time to time asking to buy her from the brothel like he did for years. Also, Fengxian said that she have no mom but a woman gave birth to her, it's a subtil way to say that Fangxian mom was also a courtesan just like her. We even learn that she was born in the brothel. Maomao is in the same case, born in the brothel from a courtesan that became really sick and lost her mind, so for Maomao too, she have no mom but a woman gave birth to her. It's sad to think of it, since it's now three generation that didn't really connected whith each other, because of the rules of the brothel and pleasure district.

This episode is like a Leonard Elmore novel, where the protagonist is flawed and the antagonist had redeeming qualities.
