NOTE: I said I liked Tom Delonge’s voice…I meant MARK HOPPUS. Oh my gosh…nothing against Tom, but if you know you know. 😅

If I didn't read the name of this band before I did the reaction, I wouldn't have guessed that this was HAGANE.

Their sound is close to what it is now, but this version seems darker. I like it! It's just different, and that's okay.

I think its potentially just this song that's more of a shift than difference between old and new Hagane (although I'm not an expert on Hagane) - however from what I've heard this has always been my favourite. Especially the extended instrumental break - it feels more experimental to me than most of their other stuff.

You still look better without makeup than I do :p ... You have only heard Nagi up to this point ... Uyu is certainly not a terrible vocalist, but Nagi is quite a bit more versatile and "better" in several ways. While Kanako is certainly not a bad drummer ... JUNNA! The old Hagane was certainly a guitar focused group ... they had dual guitars similar to Bridear ... or yes, Lovebites ;) . IMHO it is the only area where the current version of Hagane may want some updating ... I think many fans, myself included, would like to see a second guitar added back into the mix. There is a lot of noticeable backtracking on the current material because Sakura is used to having a second guitar. Your observation about "having a limb cut off" is probably accurate. I don't know if she is fully comfortable with this version of the band but have not seen anything about them looking for another member. I think the term you were looking for is symphonic ... the current line up gives much more of a symphonic metal feel and the stage now also needs to be shared with vocals and drums. Harmonic metal is the term early on the band used to describe what they play. At the end of the day the new Hagane will be light years more successful than the old one was ... but I think you can see this was always a really great band. Mana Diagram is another wonderful band and without actually going to look I think you have reacted to them. If you haven't, you should. Yeti Valhalla Is Adam Jang's band actually founded in Canada. Kanako was always advertised as a temp replacement for Matt Tomstone (UK recordings) and Taji (live shows) and was also recently replaced by Yosuke Yokoyama ... maybe :p . Yes, the Japanese music scene is very fluid ;) . Great reaction and deep dive :) .

Yes, they need a second guitar. Not necessarily a second lead but another guitar to fill out the sound. My favorite Hagane song is GunRock and that one needs the double guitar

Hagane means steel, but specifically the steel used to make swords, Hagane fans are known as Swordsmen. From what I know (although I'm not a superfan) the band centers around the Yoshida sisters Sakura and Sayaka, and the theme of the group is about video games and comics as seen in songs like Supervillian, Black Cult, Go Go Kart, and latter Hero Time, Top of the Tower and Start our Journey. The newer version of Hagane leans heavily into JRPGs. BTW Sakura's side gig is a band that does music for game soundtracks I feel like there was some kind of stress between Sakura and Mayto, in the Wintery Skies video I don't think they share a scene together, even in wide shots of the whole band playing, one of them is always missing. Just me speculating.

Both of the bands I mentioned have dual leads ... it is difficult to work out sometimes but several bands have made it work. It is easier in Japan where there is less inherent ego but you can't stop human nature. The best bands have members that can channel that into a sense of competition to drive each other. That combination is pretty rare and may be why Sakura has chosen, at least for now, to track over herself. NittPicc even alluded to that special relationship that is rarely found with another musician.

Ironically the week after you did this reaction the new Hagane rereleased this same song :) .
