Getting the opportunity to hear their songs without vocals is always fun...sorry, Saiki! Getting to hear the intense guitar lines underneath as well as Misa's bass line.

I feel really silly now that I didn't watch the self liner notes before doing all the reactions on YouTube and here, but in all reality it just gives me another opportunity to listen to the songs again with an all new perspective.

My face hurt after watching all of these videos from smiling!

When you become really famous, you can market your own brand of NittPicks!

Their instrumentals of songs that in full form have lyrics, give an opportunity to hear and see things we may not catch. I really liked Zen from the first listen. The liner notes are insightful and give a glimpse of not only the process but also the personalities of at least these three. I will be seeing Band Maid for the first time on April 11 in Yokohama and then at both Budokan shows in November - first draw on the lottery for all 3. I can hardly wait to see them in person. Thanks for doing this all together, it was fun.

What a great piece of music Zen is. Now for the liner notes!

They are such a fun time together! NittPicc, did you notice the poster on the wall behind Saiki? KEEP YOUR HEELS, HEAD AND STANDARDS HIGH

It's amazing to get a glimpse into the inner workings of that hive mind that is Band Maid, isn't it? After hearing them explain themselves, my amazement at how these five geniuses fell into place like Tetris pieces, fitting together perfectly on the first try, has only grown. And then there are those who don't believe in miracles...

How miraculously this miraculous band appeared! Kiseki-po! Miracle-po!

All of the members (including Saiki on keyboards) have a very relaxed and economical technique. I’m sure you know this isn’t easy to do, and isn’t extremely common in rock musicians. One example I can think of was a video during Covid when Misa and a bass friend from another band (I forget who) did a Zoom to learn one of the other’s songs. Both are very good bassists. I think comparing ability is useless, so it’s not really about whether one is better. But what was very evident was how much more economical Misa’s technique is, without a lot of extraneous finger movement. Of course, these videos are just playing the music. They aren’t a “performance.” Part of playing live is that visual aspect as well. Kobato plays a lot more in earlier material than a lot of folks think. She was already playing some pretty busy parts on World Domination, but the Conqueror album really picked things up. Kanami has said Miku’s palm muting is better than her own. Miku’s parts also include a lot of slides and fast chord changes across the neck. Pigeons do have a lot of short fiber muscles that allow efficient, rapid, and powerful movements. :) You can absolutely use a bass pick on a guitar. Bass picks tend to be thicker, but many players like heavy picks anyway. Brian May of Queen uses a sixpence coin as his plectrum. Misa’s bass playing reminds me a lot of Chris Squire from Yes. When the song called for it, he would play a foundational part. But it was more common that he would play melodic lines farther up the neck. It’s a more classical approach, where each instrument is playing independent but interrelated parts. It’s a more musical and less functional approach. Misa also has the benefit of Miku handling a lot of parts that mirror or replace a typical bass line.

It may not have been clear there, but all five maids are singing the chorus (woahs) in Sion. In another interview they said Misa is singing the lower line with Saiki because otherwise they thought her voice was “cute” and they found it funny (and maybe Misa did not).

Juan San

Kiseki all the way!

The bass player Misa did the Zoom with was Silent Siren's Aina Yamauchi.

That’s it. It’s a fun video. Two friends having fun playing their instruments. Not something you typically expect to see from “rock stars.”

Just some cultural references for fun... Saiki mentions eating katsudon before recording Sion. Katsudon is a fried pork cutlet cooked with eggs and onions in a shoyu/dashi broth and served in a bowl over rice. Katsu in katsudon is written in katakana but the there are different kanji for the word "katsu" that have different meanings. One kanji of Katsu is "Winning" so katsudon is sometimes eaten as pregame meal by athletes. I'm guessing that since Saiki is a baseball fan she's stacking the deck for a big win for Sion. Japanese word play, Miku likes to play with those a lot in her lyrics

Kanami's guitar is Gorgeous! Was on the list to purchase Miku's, but couldn't find the money for it when it was my turn, so I passed. I don't play guitar, I just wanted it. I'm a intermediate drummer.

Ethan

So 15:20 there's a 3rd guitar part

Ethan

17:03 adding to Band-Maid's descriptor notes, "Band-Maid's got cake". Make it a shirt! Mincho would approve.

Ethan

Yeah as what I might call an "intermediate ish" drummer, this might be one of the best chances I have at playing one of her songs. Other songs....not a chance. Not that dedicated lol.

Ethan

Never watched the Liner Notes before. Absolutely loved it!
