I can totally see Mahiru's side here. The problem I see is she made a commitment to help make that music video with Kano.

In order to grow, you need to challenge yourself with new and possibly harder projects. It can be a lot, but you can and will learn something in the process. What's difficult here is Mahiru really got her wings back when Kano told her that she loved her art.

I can also see why Kano is upset, but she needs to see that Mahiru is confident now because of her.

This episode hit hard because both of them have reasons... Mahiru want to be better by challenging herself, but that only because Kano gave her that spark and also, after this job, she will retur to Jelee better than before so it's not just for herself. Kano have abandonement issues because of her mother and the first friend (or more than friend ?) just said to her that she will go working for her mother and she pass second now... She is afraid more than upset and that was her fear that talked. But they care enough about each other and have such good friends with Mei and Kiui, that there is room for reconciliation.

NittPicc, can't sing with you. If I tried to sing, I would acquire a rap handle - Tone Def.

Kano is very heart on her sleeve for both good and bad. You could tell she regretted the words the moment they left her mouth, yet the experience with Mahiru was giving her massive flashbacks to the fallout from the controversy when she punched Mero, her emotional foundations seemingly turning to quicksand. As Spadeas has said, it's as much her fear that caused the outburst as actually being upset at Mahiru, but they're teenagers and still very much works in progress in terms of both communication & emotional maturity. As we now know that punch was certainly justified, but for whatever reason the discovery that led to it was never publicised, just making her instead look violent/unstable and thus unsuited to being an idol. As a result there's even rumours that Kano's mum ran that anonymous YT channel because the smoking expose would've benefited her group, the public never suspected that a young idol would actually be behind it. Kano can't reveal the truth without hurting Sunflower Dolls and by extension her mother. Mero is shown to have been pushed out of the centre role by Kano joining Sunflower Dolls causing resentment which is compounded by the fact she also worships her mother/their producer to an unhealthy degree, constantly praising her and seeking validation. Kano has been chasing her workaholic mother's affection & attention from a young age, compounded by what appears to be the absence of her father, it seems implied that her parents are estranged and/or divorced. Divorce laws in Japan are also pretty strict, outside of circumstances where both actively pursue co-parenting it's far more typical for one parent to get sole custody and the other not even get any guaranteed visitation rights. Idols are often held to ridiculously high standards in Japan, there's plenty of examples where successful idols have literally lost their careers over things like smoking, drinking slightly underage or even just dating (whilst slightly less of a thing now, for years it was frequently in their contracts that they weren't allowed to date and even now they often have to keep relationships hidden). Incidentally the group name is just pronounced like 'jelly' but with an elongated 'ee' at the end. Mahiru in the very first episode points out that Kano has misspelled the English word and written it more phonetically.
