If you watch any volleyball match the players signal behind their backs so the other team and coaches can't see those signals. They could focus on audibles like in football, but silent hidden signals are hard to figure out.

In baseball. Greg Maddux was the only pitcher in baseball history to signal to his catcher what he was going to throw. Certain acts while catching the ball from the catcher told the catcher the next pitch. Nobody ever figured it out. There is a video about that.

They do get to the tournament next episode, but the game doesn't start until towards the end. I'm excited for you to see the tournament matches! They're all great, and some of them span multiple full episodes. Also, I know it's supposed to be an intense scene, but I think the shot of Kageyama angrily sipping a juice box is really funny, LOL. Also, that new song at the end of the episode is actually the new opening theme, even though they played it at the end credits this time. There will be a new ending theme as well!
