I need a little but up help understanding the mage exam and the levels. I listened as best I could, but I think I am not sure I understand fully.

From what I am putting together, is it that level five is the lowest level and then first level is the highest level of mage training.

I was happy to see some old characters again and it's exciting to see A LOT of new ones!

The classes are sort of like belts in Karate in that they show your mastery via official tests (First class being the highest ranking in this case). The magic organization has admin levels and apparently the government is preventing people from traveling to the Northern Plateau unless a First Class mage accompanies them. Frieren points out that societies organizations for magic have come and gone throughout humanity's use of magic. Just because you aren't certified doesn't mean you don't know how to use magic, but just haven't been evaluated by the magic association. Frieren couldn't participate initially due to red tape and Fern had previously received a Third class certification when they were at the capital of the central lands. You have to be at least Fifth class to take the First Class mage exam (somewhat implying there are more levels lower thanFifth Class).

Yeah my sapphic mages are here :D (But I will talk about them later) For the classification of mages, in the modern era, like said in the episode there is at least ninth to first class mage, but you're considered as a proper mage when you're at least fifth class. For an exemple, imagine magic as cooking, ninth class would be a beginer that only know how to cook pasta, fifth would be someone able to cook for himself and other on a daily basis, first is a cook from a big restaurant. We know now that Fern started directly as third class mage because it was the quickest to happen, so we can assume you don't need other certificat before the third class exam, but for the first class one, you need to be at least fifth class mage, that show that it is a proper and difficult exam (that also show that Fern is very talented). Now about Lawine and Kanne, I call them the sapphic mages because there is a lot of people like me who ship them together, the comment Lawine made about Kanne being cute when she smile is one of the reason, but not the only one. They also could be read as "sisterly", but my lesbian lover heart tend to go with the sapphic path lol. They will fight less in the few next episodes if that reassure you, in this one it was just to show their dynamics but also how Frieren become the leader by default (and that made some great faces for our "young" elf mage Frieren lol). For the plan, it has something to do with the rain, but you will see it in the next episode so don't worry too much about it.

The issue is, a 1st class mage certification is required to continue the route of their Journey. Frieren obviously is one of the best mages that ever existed since she’s like 1K+ years old and defeated the demon King so naturally she would be the one to take the test. However, Frieren doesn’t really care about certification because the organizations that control Magic/mages change all the time according to her and she lives for basically an eternity so having it will become obsolete in a short time for her. She is just chillin but thinks it would be valuable for Fern considering her shorter lifespan and her connection to the world. To be eligible to take the 1st Class Mage exam, you must be 5th class or higher certified. Fern got certified as a 3rd class mage prior to leaving Heiter’s home. Frieren has no certification so she didn’t think she would be able to take it, but some old 1st Class Mage proctor who is in the Continental Magic Association recognized her holy emblem and let her take the exam. There are only about 50 certified 1st class mages currently in the Continental Mage Association—it’s very selective and highly competitive. It’s the pinnacle of magehood. That’s why Fern was so nervous about taking it without Frieren. Also, it’s very important that one of them passes so they can continue their journey.

About the holy emblem and the certification. You got it. It's like you said. Frieren has lived for more than a thousand years and the actual guild of mages is too young. Frieren is uncertified beacause she can't bother to take the exams everytime a new guild is created. For that she has the holy emblem that is the certification that she is a mage that exist a thousand years ago. But the actual guild doesn't recognize that emblem. For that Frieren says that Fern is the one that she has to do the exam because Fern is a Third class mage. But Frieren got lucky and someone knows what the emblem means. The First class is the top class. From there to going down to Tenth class. The exam prerequisites is al least Fifth class certification. Only the first class mages can travel the northen plateau because they are the most powerful and can defend themselves from the monsters and demons that live there. Lots of new characters. - Übel means "bad"....she's a bad girl...HE HE - Wirvel means "whirl". - Denken means "thought". - Lawine mean "avalanche" - Kanne means "can" Fun note. Übel's voice actress is Ikumi Hasegawa who voices Kita in Bocchi the Rock and Lawine is Sayumi Suzushiro who voices Nijika.

Think of the classes like the seating in the orchestra, 1st chair is the highest level, then 2nd chair, 3rd chair, etc. To get to a higher chair you have to be tested by the director. At the end they were talking about bubble/barrier and how it wasn't allowing the rain in.

Others have already done a good job of explaining the different mage classifications and how they work. Frieren's holy symbol represents certification and fellowship from an earlier magic society that no longer exists and pre-dates formation of the current Continental Mage Association, probably by hundreds of years at least, given none of her old party even recognised it 80-90 years prior to where we are in the story now. Also of course Frieren is older than Lawine and Kanne, they are a little older than Fern probably in their very late teens to mid-20s. By contrast whilst elves may age visually & physically far slower than humans, Frieren is still over one thousand years old, Kraft seems considerably older than her still yet only appears vaguely middle-aged in his face. Also Frieren said at the start of the mage exam to the other two that she knows of the Stille bird, but has never actually seen one in person, hence suggesting they first observe one to better understand the situation.

You are thinking about it too hard. There are mages ordered from 1 through 10 depending how good you are. You start at 10 and work your way up. Once you become 5th class mage you are able to take the tests to go up ranks. If you are confident you can jump forward and just go for the 1st class mage exam. As long as you are at least a 5th class mage. Fern is a 3rd class mage. Frieren never took a test so she is un registered And wouldnt be allowed to take the exam but since she had the holy emblem that old guy knew she was special and let her take the exam anyway.

Wow. You really brain farted over the first class mage thing. It was all explained in plain English (In the captions)). LOL
