Watching these girls talk about there being no more animals on the earth other than humans really makes me wonder what the timeline is now. Their lack of knowledge of what a fish is or the fact that they have only heard books makes me even more curious...

The characters in the show as well as the chapter titles are stylized kanji probably to reflect the style of society. You'll find out later this society is very very weird but interesting for sure.

Chito can read and write I guess their universe's version (stylized) of hiragana/katakana but not the actual kanji which I guess given their age makes sense, she only got to learn a tiny bit before war started and Yuri well she probably just forgot lol

I'm not a fan of a lot of horror anime out there, mostly because a lot of what is considered good horror manga has typically been quite poorly adapted and/or given a very limited budget when brought to screen, especially compared with the better live action versions of some of them. For example Junji Ito is considered legendary as a horror writer, but despite numerous attempts at making anime from his stories, near enough all of them have been considered failures, with some so bad it's caused fully fledged controversies. What has found significantly more success would be more horror adjacent stories that have more of a focus on some kinda of psychological angle, where horror isn't always the primary focus, instead having horror elements bleed into other storylines.

Regarding the writing within the show, from what we've been shown it vaguely resembles hiragana/katakana but isn't quite the same, it's almost like a devolution or a variant having developed off in a separate branch through isolation. If society appears to have effectively collapsed then there wouldn't be standardised teaching, think about how many educational blindspots home-schooled kids often have and the setting is almost like a variant of the dark ages in Europe where a great of preceding knowledge was lost. Heck even think about how poor reading comprehension is in large chunks of the American population due to underfunding for fractured syllabuses dictated by politics over actual educational needs.

Agree 100%. Anime do great at psychological horror and not so much at classic gore horror.

Also the three anime I mentioned in my comment under the first episode wasn't meant as a reverse psychology dare, whilst I like sharing & watching you react to emotionally affecting shows, those three would just make you a combination of legitimately upset, disturbed and possibly angry to the point of quitting them halfway through.

Two of my recommendation for a dark anime would be: 1. Puella Magi Madoka Magica and 2. Paranoia Agent
