Just listening to Yuuri talk about how people and objects can live forever through a photograph made me think hard about how I feel about pictures.

I dislike taking pictures, meaning I don't like to be in them. I do however, love taking photos of places and people candidly living in the moment. Posed photos are always a lovely thing to have at times, but there is something about having a moment captured in time that's real that makes me happy.

I figured we say cheese because you show your teeth and you look like you're smiling even if you didn't intend on smiling

Andrew Hellebrand

Similar to what Henri was saying, I think saying cheese (or other stock phrase of your choice) when having a group picture taken is about having a way of roughly synchronising the expressions of the subjects of the photograph, cheese having gained widespread use in variants across multiple languages for the reasons he stated. For a long time I hated having my picture taken in a posed fashion because I couldn't smile deliberately in a way that to me came across as natural, I was just too self-conscious, especially in my early-mid teens. I'm far more comfortable now but I'll just default to a big cheesy grin most of the time. As for being unprepared for the existential thoughts and philosophical moments, it's kind of one of the pillars this show's storytelling leans heavily upon. It makes you think but can be explored in a slightly less confrontational way when the musings are being delivered by moe anime girls. Plus from a narrative standpoint their upbringing in a post apocalyptic/dying world means they're having less societal preconceptions colouring their views.
