This. Was. AWESOME!

I think this episode takes the cake when it come to intense reactions and facial expressions from me. It was such a great episode, but it was hard to watch! I was so worried for every member of the party that was left. I was worried I was going to see a character die!

The action was so intense.

I have a small question though. What was with that look that Fern got from the replica Frieren that sent her flying? That was insane!

This is why spoilers are forbidden. I think that Frieren only began to understand humans once she came to live with Heiter and Fren and start teaching Fern. Even the ten years she spent with the band of misfits didn't have that much of an impact, but once Himmel died she was surprised at the emotion that it caused her. She's still trying to figure out human emotions and probably will never fully understand them as she is a different type of creature with completely different ingrained reactions to external stimuli. Prior to the band of hero's she pretty much lived alone for a thousand years without contact with any other creatures, not humans and probably not other elves. Think about that for a moment, a thousand years with no contact with any intelligent creature, the mind that doesn't break from that isolation is not human.

A kickass episode. The best action piece of season 1. Übel is weird, no?.... I'm not psychiatrist, but she sometimes acts a little detach....a little psychopat maybe?!. The fandom likes her because she is hot, of course, and the meme "I can fix her" fits her perfectly. HE Two episodes to season 1 to go.

I learned about tsundere meaning in one of the Fate stay night. Basically multiverse series with every version following different decisions. Rin was model of tsundere in that one. I wanted a Sabre figure for a long time, but i don't have money for toys. Says someone with a boardgame collection :)

Fern: "My master says basic offensive magic is enough to beat mages of this era." Frieren, facing Denken: - modified Zoltraak Frieren, facing herself: - lightning - fireburst - plasma - black hole - more lightning - huge golem + more lightning - massive original black Zoltraak(?) - solar systems - shattering reality

In terms of the final attack that the replica of Frieren uses on Fern, that would be what is referred to as the episode title, as Fern detected no mana usage or even that the attack was a spell and after the fight Frieren comments that the last time she was forced to use it was 80yrs ago, which would mean in the climactic fight against the Demon King with the party of heroes. Übel almost certain possesses sociopathic and/or psychopathic personality traits, when we first met her, traveling to register for the mage exams, she was literally acting more vulnerable to encourage bandits to attack her so she could have an excuse to kill them. Only Kraft the elven monk intervening prevented that, giving them a chance to flee and he did that because he'd come across the mutilated corpses of others she'd similarly encountered in the surrounding forests. If she were living in modern society there's a not insignificant chance she'd end up being a serial killer. But she does also seem to be very self-aware of how unusual her behaviour & ways of thinking are compared to those around her and that she sometimes makes others feel uncomfortable just by her very presence. She actually reminds me a little of Michael C. Hall's portrayal of Dexter Morgan. In German the word 'Übel' is most commonly used to refer to an event that is turning out 'nasty' or 'bad'. In some contexts, 'Übel' can be used as an adjective that describes evil intent or feeling sick. Some of the reasons for her popularity in the fandom is a combination of her appearance and somewhat unhinged nature, as Luis said she gives off heavy 'I can fix her' delusional vibes.

Frieren is my 1b anime (1a is Violet Evergarden). Whatever frieren does, it does it extremely well whether its art, soundtrack, story, character development, humor. It is truly an anime that has it all.

I'm loving this anime - the only thing I've found a bit strange is the pacing, in terms of for the first number of episodes it covered large amounts of time and distance quickly (even after the initial time jumps once the new party is formed), and now we've been on the 1st class mage tests for about 5 or 6? Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying these episodes a lot, but just feels different compared to most of the season.

We finally get the back story of ubel failing the exam because she killed the proctor …she can cut anything she thinks she can cut so a cloak is nothing but cloth to her
