Hey y'all, I love that Patreon now gives us a place to show you what we're trying out. This is a pilot to a new series we've been working on. It's a chance to bring back what we always had fun with Weird Rules, but opening us up to telling all the stories that our brains come up with that are tied to things going on today. It's a different approach for us, but we're trying to do the Secret Base version of something y'all might not have expected from us.

This pilot won't hit YouTube, mainly because we rolled Olympics as a test case for talking about something recent, but want to know what y'all think so that when episodes do start hitting YouTube we've heard y'all's thoughts and can keep making it better and better. Ok I'll shut up and let you check it out.

Not a fan of the less-scripted-more-conversational stuff personally, just feels relatively unfocused and doesn't keep my attention as well. Weird Rules is about the limit for me and I do enjoy those but this is a series I would skip.

John Smith

This seems like a fun new series. I enjoy the more organic back and forth compared to the closest analog (weird rules).

Adam Foote

My wife's first comment on that last guy: "I don't even want to imagine how that locker room smelled"

Sam

I love Weird Rules. Y'all have so much conversational synergy and it's what I love about The Annex too. I don't have time right this second to watch but I am sure I will love this.

This is really great stuff, and I enjoy a return to seeing y’all in front of a mic. Gives Card Show vibes, and I imagine those sections are a bit less production intensive than all of the visual based content. I think there are a lot of folks that would enjoy seeing your faces more, the content on SB right now is awesome but outside of Kofie we don’t see y’all very much.

Mike HBC

Is this really quiet for anyone else? Max volume on my laptop is only barely enough to hear them talk.

buoy

This was really cool, love the more conversational tone of y'all talking about strange little sports moments. Alex's interlude was really interesting, but definitely a little jarring. Wicked excited to see more!

Charlie's Inferno

I enjoy the concept of this but something about the execution feels off. Like the 'well not saying you guys didn't do this right butttt' didn't sit well with me. I personally wouldn't watch.

Ethan May

I’ve always liked the ways Secret Base has found to talk about the non-sport, or purely human, elements of sports; I find it fun. The jump from scripted bits to unscripted bits is jarring, and the unscripted bits aren’t as engaging. I think there’s potential here if the scripted to unscripted ratio flips, a la pre-documentary dorktown stuff (Adam Dunn, Ricky Henderson, etc.) I still appreciate you guys putting time and effort into it and coming to us for our opinions!

The organic back-and-forth works a lot better for a podcast. Oddly, I was making lunch when watching this, and found the conversation was fine when I was distracted, and then alerted to looking at the pictures when they popped up. But for the purposes of video, it needs to move a little faster.

As a weird rules fan, I like this! I really enjoyed the mid-video edited package to break up the conversation. It makes it feel a bit less like a video podcast and more like a produced piece.

Matthew

I love the concept here. I agree with the other commenters that the execution seems a bit off, but that's expected for the first episode of a new series with a new format. The idea reminded me of something from the Gimlet podcast Resistance. Back in 2021 they did the episode "F Your Water Fountain" and a short series of episodes about iconic images and the stories behind them. The format was similar, with one person explaining a photograph and others reacting to it, but with more story and context given throughout. Similarly, one of the things I loved about Weird Rules was that it was partially scripted for one person so they could relay the story to the other people and then have an unscripted conversation about it. But I am excited to see how this develops, and I'm already looking forward to the episode I know y'all will do on Sha'Carri Richardson!

I have really missed the weird rules videos, so this is a balm on my soul

Erik Williams

I dig it. For a first episode of a new series, it’s rough in parts but I found it very entertaining. And yea, it’s great to see everyone on camera again.

mike

One I thought of for this bit is the one of ufc fighter nick diaz laying down in the octagon in front of Anderson silva during their fight lol

Conlan Webster

I think you guys are definitely on to something here. I totally dig the conversational, Weird Rules-style format and tone. You guys cracked a couple jokes throughout that would have made great Weird Rules-style animated cutaways. My only criticism is that I found the topic a bit too broad. That's a very subjective criticism from someone who loves deep dives so please take it with a grain of salt.

darragh O

Dricus du plessis always looks unprepared and out of place in the octagon

Nicholas Poer

love love love this, can't wait to see more

dano

Definitely needs a bit of polishing (namely that it would be cooler if it had a narrower scope and we could deep dive the topics a bit more) , but love the vibes and super promising

Sebastien Rempel

I feel like the way to get the most out of this series would be to increase the amount of interplay between the scripted and non scripted parts. Alex’s part in this video kinda felt like it interrupted the video’s flow, which I think could be easily fixed by making future videos cut back and forth between the scripted parts and the conversational parts and having the conversation be more centred around what was said in the edited portion of the video. Excited to see where y’all go with this series!

Ian C

The vibes are nice and relaxed and it fills a new niche compared to your other content (always a plus), but more polished integration of relevant clips or images could help boost the production value a bit more.

Profile

I really the weird rules videos, so I liked the conversational format this had

Stevie Rea

I liked it, but not entirely sure I understand the concept; so is it all about seeing athletes in a different way? Or specifically about athletes who don't fit the mold we'd expect? Either way could be cool!

David Grier

"Here's a cool thing, everyone bring a similar example" is a winning formula for me, could go anywhere with it. This was a fun discussion, panel of 3 works better than 2 on weird rules I think. Throwing to a scripted segment felt a bit disjointed but could work, maybe if the crew watches the segment as well and comments on/refers to it throughout the rest of the discussion?

Andrey Chichagov

I enjoyed this, but they gotta do their homework lol (bringing in the right assignment)

Randal Crumpen

There should be a separate NFL where players have to smoke at half-time. Failure to do so results in a ban and/or a fine.

Zach Sessions

Totally agree with this— I love the scripted start leading into more natural informal stuff is great, the execution needs to get smoothed out evenly across the whole thing, but it’s a great start and I’m excited!

Lucas Mergendahl

freakin loved this. super lowkey vibes. loved the show and tell aspects of ‘weird rules’ and ‘that’s weird’ and this scratches that itch perfectly. more of this please !!!

kalifschorsch

What everyone is missing about Dikec is how he was one shot away from winning gold. And it should get a rewinder episode. In almost very round of the finals, his shot was the best. He scored multiple 10s. But his partner didn't always shoot well enough to beat the aggregate score of their opponents. Then it came down to the final round. The other three had already fired their shots. Dikec was still aiming. When he finally fired, he hit high. The worst of his shots. And the gold medal was gone.

Iris Jay

this is neat! if this is going to be a series about sports photography, maybe you could also go into profiles about the industry behind that-- interviews with whoever took the picture of the episode, what getting shots of athletes doing different sports involves in different situations, etc? it seems like it'd be a neat way to highlight another part of the sports scene that's often taken for granted!

Corey Collier

Please do Dick Allen’s sports illustrated cover where he’s smoking a cigarette while juggling baseballs in the Chicago white Sox dug out wearing the sweet 70s red and white pinstripes. Dick Allen should be in the hall of fame just off that picture alone.

FRESHPOETIC

Fun! Is it supposed to be fully bleeped? Because fudge was cut, but not shiitake mushrooms.
