Hey, everybody! Jon here. Ever since we started this Patreon a year ago, I've been kicking around the idea of putting together a little radio show full of tracks I've used in my Secret Base projects. So here's the debut of the Secret Base Radio Music Program. Within, I've selected 13 tracks from our APM music catalog, most of which you've heard before in Pretty Good, Chart Party, or Dorktown. I also jump on the mic here and there to give a little bit of commentary, although I tried not to step on the music too much.

I had a lot of fun putting this together, so if y'all enjoy it, I'll do it again sometime. In other news, Alex and I are cooking up a brand-new, four-part series, "Scorigami." My original scorigami video is almost nine years old at this point and ran only twenty minutes, so we thought it was about time to expand it into a full-length series. We're gonna drop the first episode on Monday, June 2nd. Can't wait. Anyway, enjoy this baker's dozen of catalog music jams that, to me at least, are about 100 times better than they have any business being.

This might be the perfect show to work to just in time

Zach Benedict

Jon, I can't thank you enough for introducing me to Keith Mansfield

Beans-A-Weens

Hey! From the racks and stacks, it's the best on wax! How 'bout another double-golden-oldie-twin-spin-sound-sandwich from J-O-N BOIS?

Louis Marchese

Holy shit I didn't know scorigami is gonna be a 4 parter

FRESHPOETIC

Next time, please include listener messages to their lovers.

Steve S.

I've been listening to these tracks on YouTube for years. So stoked you are doing this!

CJ

I listen to this stuff all the time while working or driving these days. It's awesome to hear the guy who introduced me to the wonderful world of KPM and friends explain his thoughts about the music. "In the Clouds" and "Cubic" have become legit favorite songs of mine even beyond the context of Jon's videos. Shout-out to JaMario Moon

Matthew

I love this idea. Secret Base videos are what got me into library music, and now I enjoy shuffling through random songs from time to time. It's fun when you stumble across something that you recognize from its being used in media.

CJ

Never has a composer's name sounded so appropriate for the music he makes

Ben Peltz

Just waiting to jam some Rafferty

Fent Addict

I discovered war on drugs and young widows from you, and I love them both. Your music choice is always immaculate.

Pietro Gagliardi

Library music and musicians need to get more acknowledgement in the wider world; it's just too good. These songs that you used specifically have been drilled deeper and deeper into my head since I started watching you (which was with the Falcons documentary), and I want to get the albums these tracks debuted in (if they were even documented well; Discogs surprisingly has more than nothing but nowhere near enough). "Love on the Shore" has been my obsession these past few weeks.

MJA

Clarence Beeftank introduced me to Mogwai via the banging "Jaguar"

Michael Chernjawski

Gotta wait for the homies to get out of the car before I can play Contrapunkt by Francis Monkman

CJ

Slow Drive is a great one. I love the description of "corporate core" music, that's what I associate with Dorktown and it's a genre that's never had a true revival

CJ

Oh, is Fresh and Crazy the one with Baby Dance from the Prince segment in the Vikings doc? I have noticed UrinatingTree use it in his Sportsball videos

CJ

Oh man, Image; those end credits of the Vikings doc where it shows every team's record in the Super Bowl era, and the tribute to Bud Grant, makes me cry every time 🥲

Matt

Sure hope we get l'esapce temps in this one!

Efren Echavarria

I thank you Jon for introducing me to these tracks that make up my everyday life now.

Bob Parry

Loved this, hoping for more radio episodes in future! Marrakech by Alan Henshaw and Brian Bennett is one I loved I found through Secret Base, was in Fool Time as they are connecting through Newfoundland

CJ

I adore when it pops up in silly moments like the Randy Moss traffic incident. I hear that BWOMMMM and know something wacky is about to go down

Justin Lederman

Jon you are the reason I know who Gerry Rafferty is

CJ

I associate that one with the end of the Saddest Punt video after he reveals the twist ending. Legit gorgeous track

mweepigeon

Oh this is really fun, I love this

CJ

Only time these tracks get noticed outside of Dorktown videos is if a hip-hop beat samples it, and I could see that happening with more than a few KPM tracks I've encountered

Redwraith VEVO

Exquisite. I've been introduced to many tracks i've grown to love over the years through the work of Jon and all the other wonderful people at Secret Base. Keep the hits rolling!

Pietro Gagliardi

I was definitely thinking of "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" when writing that comment lol

Chopp

No baker street :(

CJ

Because those songs aren't library music. But there is still some epic saxophone solos

CJ

Serengeti is spine-chilling. And both times Jon used it, it was in reference to the Minnesota Vikings - the saddest punt of all time in the 2006 season, and the frigid 2015 playoff game where Bud Grant took the field in short sleeves like a legend. As a Vikings fan it stirs my soul to hear that mournful sax

Noah Higginbotham

I hope there is a reasonable amount of feedback received to do a part two. Lofi beats to secret base to <3

Wyatt Reed

Awesome, Boiscore radio and more scorigami? You really shouldn't have.

Jack Hanley

I need more of this. Will be patiently waiting for Fantasy by Mariah Carey

Sam

Your works introduced me to Broadcast and Jaga Jazzist which I will always appreciate.

John Pazniokas

Just getting started, and hoping we get Taklamakan, the end-credits piece from Falcons. I loved it so much I went searching for it. The entire album is on Spotify, EXCEPT for that track. I ended up finding it from some overseas seller on ebay, the only CD I've bought in decades, just so I could add it to my "Jon Bois Stuff" spotify playlist.

Missing Texture

This was a real delight, I really love hearing your thought process and retrospectives. Thank you.

Cade

Love this! A great supplemental to the documentaries that pulls back the curtain on one of the best parts of yall's work (the music) in an interesting way. Would love more of these in the future!

Valtteri Nietula

It would be great to have a list of the songs to make it easier to find the songs in potential future editions.

John Pazniokas

Love this, and totally want more. Also: is there a youtube drop date for Fool Time part 1? I'm trying to hook family into Jon Bois style stuff, and that might be the magic bullet.

Ryan Petriello

Hoooly shit I didn’t realize until now that Style City is in 7

cosmia

'slow hope' by emmanuel jessua gives me chills every time u drop it. i've also listened to alberto baldan bembo's 'oblo' on repeat many times since u made captain ahab. love this stuff

Regendur

Join Bois as a smooth jazz radio DJ is not something I expected, but as always, am pleasantly surprised by.

Jessica Baggs

Channel 9 cricket is etched into the psyche of any Australian over the age of 20. Only thing personally that comes close is holy grail by hunters and collectors as it was used as the Channel 10 footy intro.

Forrest P

One of my favorite you introduced me to is Graham De Wilde ‎– Clouds. The album itself has such a lovely build up. Front to back bangers.

Kofie Yeboah

Was also a huge fan of Geoff Bastow! His music is featured in a lot of Fumble Dimensions

Wyatt Reed

Damn it is too, how didn't I ever catch that lol. Such a banger

Wyatt Reed

Would love some more, super cool to hear how you go about using music in your work, it's definitely one of the things that hooked me when I found you. Dossier has to be my favorite of the gems you've found, thanks for giving these tracks a chance to shine <3

Nolan McDermott

hey jon longtime listener I'd like to request "Wind Farm" by Guy and Zab Skornik for next time out, thanks

Jacob Moreno

This is exactly what I wanted, thank you!

Harrison Hodges

I'm a dirty queenslander so we don't have aussie rules up here, but every time I hear that first but of C9C I am transported back to my unairconditioned living room in early January with nothing to do all day. It's amazing.

David Dyte

So many memories. Rod Marsh smacking Lance Cairns all over the park, the West Indies just destroying Australia all the time, Dennis Lillee threatening to pummel Javed Miandad, Trevor Chappell... well, you know what he did.

GandalfTheRad

My only complaint with the voiceovers is the music was sometimes still a little loud and I couldn't tell what you were saying without actively trying to parse it

David Dyte

Guessing this goes back further, but do you have any Alan Hawkshaw in the collection? That guy did some amazing work in this line of music.

Saul Allan Weinberger

Already listened to this stuff in the various Dorktown playlists on Spotify, but having Jon as DJ makes it 👌

Alex Mattson

Just gonna patiently wait for my weindorf and bardoni/warr next time. And leaving out a new day (the quintessential jon bois song) feels criminal

amdsports

I’ve always appreciated your music selection but didn’t realize how much I needed this commentary track. Thanks Jon

Daniel Williams

Yes please Jon do another one. My favorite is always going to be the great advance

George T. Zimmerman

As an Australian it's so funny hearing the Channel 9 Cricket intro

George T. Zimmerman

And we absolutely need another one of these, Love De Luxe was robbed

pizzaboy7296

Honestly my favorite part of this was just getting to peek inside your creative process even just a little. Your commentary was super interesting and it is super cool to hear you talk about your own work like this!

BlackLegg

i'll take ten of these, please. fr this is one of my favorite pieces of content from yall in a little bit. keep it up!

The January Storm

Genuinely the way music is integrated into the scripts of episodes and the way it conveys and expressions the emotional content of the moment is just genuinely unmatched by anyone who's doing what I guess is now a genre of documentary. It absolutely rips

Wingcap

Jon, this was an absolute delight. I would listen to so many of these. There's so many excellent tracks I'd love to hear again with commentary around them, perhaps epic centerpieces like Legacy, Glass Echo and Supernatural by Oliver Holmes, or say Sofa Panorama by David Kpossou, are too, I don't know exactly, emotional for Secret Base Radio. But you GOTTA include Winning Forces and Masterplan by Nicolo Bardoni, and Dossier by Brian Bennett on the next one. I was surprised to not hear them! Anyway, thanks team 😄

David Jackson

The moment he said 'the aw dang'it' music I knew exactly what was coming - great stuff. Looking forward to the next one (and echo the requests for Masterplan and The Power Game - so iconic)

CJ

I actually have heard Dossier in an old NFL Films video with John Facenda narration. I was surprised at first, but also the Monday Night Football theme, Heavy Action, was a KPM joint as well

CJ

I don't remember if Legacy has ever been on streaming because I'd add it to my playlist if it were. Lots of love around here for Winning Forces, and I second that, because I can't get enough of that particular drum tone

Wingcap

Yeah I had to find Legacy as a re-upload on YouTube but it does the job

Wingcap

Serengeti is an absolute triumph yes

Zach

This is awesome, so is everything that shows up in this feed.

Jon Andringa

I absolutely loved this and we need another one. I gotta say my video of yours music-wise has to be the Steve Jeltz video, incorporating some of that into your next radio program would make me lose my mind.

James Goforth

I would love to hear “Marrakech” by Alan Hankshaw and Brian Bennett if you do another episode of this series. When you dropped that track during Felix Hernandez’s perfect game I got full body chills.

minjachi

So glad Round Up made the cut, that was the PERFECT song to start reform part 2

Evan

Jon, loved the commentary. Please do another one featuring Contrapunkt please!

Ebbe Haugaard

yeah i would listen to about a million more episodes of this

Erik Williams

Gotta make us wait for that one since Contrapunkt is one hell of a banger lolol

joe shlabotnik

To a degree, it’s a shame you can’t use licensed music anymore - I think my favorite Pretty Good moment of all time is the part in the one about Lonnie Smith where the guitar/saxophone solo is playing over the WAR graph showing Lonnie’s resurgent 1991, and the music in the episode about Koo Dae-Sung is perfect - but the APM stuff really just adds a new level to these videos I can’t quite describe. On this topic, I’ve been wondering for years what the wicked upbeat song that plays at the end of the Jack Bauer video is. I’ve never been able to find it.

Michael Makar

This is awesome, and I’d be happy to listen to other SB artists’ Catalogue DJ Radio!

Daniel Robinson

I would absolutely love another. I love you talking about the tracks and your thought process on different things. And I love trying to remember which parts of which videos each song was used in, and having you tell us later in the song. Thank you for doing this. Also just shooting my unrelated shot here; I think this would make for an incredible video. Maybe even a Summoning Salt style record history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_Run_challenge

Mike Peluso

That song feels like it's right out of SimCity 2000. Even moreso when they use it to talk about the mid-1990s Falcons and building up the Atlanta Metro area.

Sebastien Rempel

Oh my god the song from the upcoming scorigami project was great, it sounded almost Kraftwerk-esque. I’ve also mentioned my love of Roland Kovac’s Cubic on here before, would be great to hear that one in the next instalment!

AER

jon, i enjoyed this a lot and you should do it again

Erik Helmle

Please do this once a month

Bailey McLellan

I feel the need to drop the Channel 9 cricket intro in here, this was the theme to cricket in Australia for about 40 years for us, we rarely hear this theme anymore since Channel 9 lost the rights in 2018. https://youtu.be/R63PKROJ5Ao

FRESHPOETIC

Always love a reason to listen to a podcast at 1X. Great work and please make more like this! I have enjoyed smooth jazz unironically for 20 years now. And I was born in 1986!

Tyler W.

This rules, I could have listened to this for days on end. The Jon Bois-i-verse set of tracks have become absolute standards for me to work to (I also work with sports stats, so it fits). So much so, that a large chunk of the Reform and Dave Stieb soundtracks have wound up on my Spotify wrapped the last few years. Your care in weaving these songs into the narratives you tell has not gone unnoticed. You both elevate each other. I wouldn't have discovered a banger like Oblo without the videos, but the emotional weight of the Vikings teaser wouldn't have been as impactful without Oilfield Panorama.

DyingRabbit_Art

Jon, I'm afraid you're going to have to keep doing these, because you haven't talked about my favorite tracks yet.

Keaton Sturm

Awesome first episode on what I'm hoping becomes just a daily radio program

Jason8724

Please do more of these!

William Sniegowski

Anyone here know where I can stream/download "Maybe Semiconductors"? Of all the songs on Jon's list, it's the one that is the most difficult to find online.

Thomas Trangmoe

Please please more please yes more of this yes please god more

Calvin Schutt

This has been amazing music/podcast content to listen to while working. And I really do love the commentary to give details on the songs and how they're used. I would love to get more of these episodes!

Leave Nelson B

I've tried so many times to get my stuff into the APM catalog.

Rebmon

Four part series with Alex?! Dorktown is back baby!

Dr. Katz

This is a niche that is right up my alley, because of you I’ve discovered a love for “library music”. Thank you for doing this Jon.

Fox Doucette

Give me an entire episode of this series that's just the best of Francis Monkman. Contrapunkt is the "strap in, this is about to get crazy" theme of so many Dorktown series (and Fool Time.)

Jake Ryan

Please please please please do more

Chonk Doink

Love this, any chance we can get the music for the collapse videos for the next “radio”?

trades

Would love some more of this, nice way to tide the ears over between projects! Would love Cumulus (B) making an appearance, somehow that song feels like it showed up with one of everything and just makes trying it all on groovy. A song where someone's getting away with something. Things are going whimsically, beautifully, spectacularly sideways

ehntoo

This was wonderful.

Nate Wild

I'd love another one of these! Maybe with a focus on the classics from older videos like "Zero Gravity" and "Love De Luxe"

Theo

More please

Jake Schnos

Honestly would love a whole series of these. So cool to hear the ideas behind the music

Leave Nelson B

Does This include some of the amazing piano work from the Dumbest Boy Alive video? I did a once through and did not hear them and they have lived in my mind for at least 2 presidential terms

Alistair Muir

I would also like more, but only if it's not too much work. Don't want my Jon blowing out.

Kilo

More needed

Sierra Black

My brain just conjures the sting whenever "Pilots are gone" or "Aw, dang it" show up.

Sierra Black

There's a surprising amount of music for TV that you think, "Wait, that was part of the KPM Green Sleeve series?" Stuff like both Jet Set and Gathering Crowds for This Week in Baseball, and Heavy Action for Monday Night Football. It's wild that there was a time when TV programs would just license music like that. Yes, love this, would absolutely be here for more.

Blue Weber

I came back to listen to this after listening to both Part 1 & 2 of the new Scorigami and love hearing the music from those in this playlist. Great job!

sandiegospirit

This is an absolute delight. So much of the stuff that I hear in your documentaries reminds me of 80s era Alan Parsons Project and Herbie Hancock. The APM catalogue has really reignited my love of music made by studio techs just having a blast doing their thing. Please do more of these.

Jamie B.S.

i'd love another one of these <3

ck

"Roundup" goes unbelievably hard, exquisite

CJ

Just dropped a new one yesterday!

Erik Williams

Ross Perot......says no LOLOL (I remember Roundup kicking in during Part 2 of REFORM, when Ross Perot declines to help Jesse Ventura)

FizerTsakalidas

Sincerely hope you do this again. Just found this, and it was wonderful.
