Hey it's Seth! Ryan, Phil, and I made this episode of Collapse about the Atlanta Hawks of the 1990s. They were really good, like genuine Bulls rivals for a little while there, and they miraculously managed to stay good even after trading away their superstar, Dominique Wilkins. But as they continued to fall short in the loaded Eastern Conference, the Hawks opted to move away from another superstar -- Dikembe Mutombo this time -- and it didn't go so hot.

Lotta good names in this one. Lotta good history, too. Hope you enjoy!

One Atlanta franchise to suffer a collapse through….patiently waiting with agony the 2016 Falcons.

Fox Doucette

The dominance of MJ really hides how much parity there was in the NBA in the 1990s. Chicago played Detroit, Cleveland, New York, Orlando, Miami, and Indiana in the ECF during their six title runs—six different teams. They faced the Lakers, Blazers, Suns, Sonics, Jazz, and then, in the only repeat in the ECF or Finals, finally faced the Jazz again in 1998 for the title. That's 11 unique teams out of 12 possible opponents, but of course it's overshadowed by one team clearly being better than all of the above. Atlanta never snuck into an ECF between their joining the Eastern Conference in the 1970-71 season and their first ECF in 2015. They were always a cut below that A tier of East teams in the '80s and '90s.

The Falcons don't really collapse. They're perpetually just kinda bad and occasionally come out of nowhere, which isn't quite the same thing. Since 2016 they've had one winning season (10-6 in 2017), one really bad season (4-12 in 2020), and a bunch of consistent losing (7 wins in five of the other six seasons and 8-9 last year.) That's less collapse and more the trickster god as a mascot we all know and love.

As much as I love "Collapse" as a series, picking the 1990s Hawks as a subject is...a stretch. They never came close to winning a title, couldn't even make it to a conference final. I feel like to qualify as a team or franchise to have a "collapse", they first need to make it to the highest of heights from which to fall. I think Seth just wanted an excuse to do another basketball subject when there's so many teams from other sports and other eras to examine with more compelling stories of going from first-to-worst than this barely-above-average-with-virtually-zero-playoff-success team.

Emerging from the crash of the Mike Smith era is the backstory to explain leading up to the 2016 season. The 2015 season showed the promise this team could measure up to and they did indeed maximize their opportunity the following year. Not to mention, Matt Ryan entered into the second part of his career achieving new heights under a new HC and innovative OC. The team was on the verge of immortality when they suffered the mother of all collapses. Since that time, their record trended in the wrong direction which is a staple for these Collapse episodes. Their OC bolted for SF, they suffered a slew of injuries (another staple for a NFL collapse episode), the restructured salaries of their two biggest stars hampered their salary cap, their HC who led them to the SB was fired into the 2020 season where they posted their worst record since 2013 (4-12). Throw in the blown leads during the 2020 season and still not having a playoff worthy campaign since 2017….AND the Cousins fiasco? No, the 2016 Falcons deserve a Collapse episode.

"Here's Hanno Mottola." needed that today, thank you

I dunno, I don't think I'd classify back-to-back seasons of 55+ wins as "barely above average".

Fox Doucette

Well, those are all good points but how is that different from Part 7 of the History of the Atlanta Falcons Dorktown series after the Super Bowl part?

I mean how dumb do you have to be to trade away the voice of Cookie Monster?

The thing about the 90s hawks is even in March 1998 the fans had already somewhat checked out. I was there for the Bulls game that set the NBA attendance record and they were giving out free t-shirts for a "whiteout" except the crowd in Atlanta was ⅔ wearing Bulls gear so it wasn't very effective

I kind of agree with this, I thought the hawks collapse would be about the 2010s version of them, which is a pretty interesting story in itself. RIP dikembe though, what a legend

Because the Collapse soundtrack along with the narration from either Seth, Will, Clara, Joe or Steven would provide a somber, melancholy feel that can capture just how painful that collapse truly was.

Man, this just reminded me that Mutombo passed away last year and I got sad again.

YESSS I LOVE THE HAWKS THANK YOU SETH RYAN AND PHIL 🔥❤️
