Hey everybody, it's Jon again. Today, Alex and I have something special for you: the first episode of SCORIGAMI, a four-part documentary series we've wanted to make for a very long time.

It's been eight years since I published my original scorigami video on YouTube. Since then we've seen many more instances of scorigami pop up on the board that are of great historical significance. But the real reason we're running this back is that the first time around, I had to leave so many ridiculous stories on the cutting room floor. Scorigami, it turns out, offers a fascinating cross-section of some of the strangest, funniest stories that can be found within NFL history. In this first episode, we're diving into the league's early decades and surfacing with a whole bunch of stories that we bet you've never heard before.

All four parts of this series will end up free-to-watch for everyone on our YouTube channel at some point in September. Since you're a Patreon member, though, we want to get you these episodes as early as we possibly can. Part 2 will drop right here on Monday, July 7th, Part 3 on Monday, August 4th, and Part 4 on Monday, September 1st. We hope you have half as much fun watching them as we did making them.

P.S. if you're a new member, we have tons more Patreon-exclusive stuff waiting for you. We've got a really fun new podcast, Phys Ed, in which we chop it up about our formative experiences with sports in general. There's also my four-part documentary series FOOL TIME, about smart guys, stupid guys, and the construction of the proto-Internet in the 1800s.

18:32 DEJA VU???

is it just me or is the music really loud in this episode? also, enjoyable episode, but it's interesting to place so much emphasis on being able to create scores from a combination of 7s and 3s when the only numbers that *don't* have this property are 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, and 11

Mouse Madness

As a Scorigami expert, I knew most of this already, but the presentation and extra detail were incredible. Bravo!

Mitchell Smith

Another obscure incorrectly scored game that only Jon has noticed?? Oh no

Nate Wild

The editing on this one is insane, I love the "folder style" split screen approach. It's like I'm watching "24" but with old football. This is gonna be a good series Also as soon as I saw there was a team called the Washington Glee Club I could tell what joke was coming lol

Eli Krule

Hell yes! The audio cuts in a few places starting around the 30 and 31 minute mark just as an fyi

Michael Welchans

I mean sure, but a lot of other numbers (12, 25, 37, etc.) require strange amounts of 7s and 3s. 37, for example, requires 4 TDs and 4 FGs, a rare occurrence--a much easier way to get there would be 5 TDs and a safety, you know?

Sawyer Knierim

Can we be anymore back? I think this is the bar for being back

CJ

"There are no boring stories; people are full of wonder" - Jon

CJ

Worth mentioning that the very last (to date) 0-0 finish occurred *before* the first 20-17 score occurred. That, to me, is the sign of football as we know it being born

David Dyte

You didn't make the correction? You have to make the correction. Please make the correction. 33-3.

Frank Donovan also played guard and had a blocked punt return touchdown against Clinton per the 10/11/1920 Moline Daily Dispatch. His full name is listed in the 12/8/1920 and 10/24/1921 editions

PsyMar

Electing to defend a specific goal might be reasonable if there is not only a strong wind, but reason to believe that the wind will die down sometime close enough to the end of the quarter. I don't know if that happens in other parts of the country but here in North Carolina, we sometimes get crazy, monsoon-like deluges of rain that are over in 20-30 minutes, so I can believe it could happen. Admittedly I haven't done the research on whether it happened, or was expected to, in the two cases you mention.

Angry-est

Music is a little loud in the last 10 minutes, particularly the 73-0 segment

Fox Doucette

First heard "Transit" by Monkman during the Fool Time series and it's a fantastic tune to back the basic explanation of what Scorigami is and how it works/recapping the original YouTube video.

David Dyte

We were sooooo close to a modern day 0-0 a few years ago when Miami played Pittsburgh on a brutally damaged, turf-laid-on-top-of-turf field in a downpour a few years ago. I was actively hoping for it but the Steelers went and won it on a short FG super late into OT.

Fox Doucette

I once bore witness to a high school game that ended 6-4. My brother played in it, in 1995, a Massachusetts high school game where the hometown Reading Rockets defeated my (and my brother's) high school from the next town over, the Wakefield Warriors. In both cases, the safety was taken in lieu of punting because Reading's punter had a better chance of getting a good foot on it on a free kick. Wakefield was driving for the winning field goal (the kid we had as a kicker attracted some recruiting attention from D-1 colleges) when a kid fumbled, game over. Reading went to the state D-2 Super Bowl that year.

ARTexplains (Xander Toftness)

I also think he should make the correction. Scorigami's big now, I think we can make it happen on the books, too. I have a plan (it involves forming a glee club).

ARTexplains (Xander Toftness)

You're telling me that if a winning team scores more than 73 points, or a losing team scores more than 51 points, we get to scale up and also get oodles of new boxes to check?

Fox Doucette

I want to believe he was from Kentucky so that Google can throw the greatest "showing results for..." in the history of search engine technology.

Fox Doucette

Or 5 TDs, one with a missed extra point, and a field goal, an even more likely outcome considering kickers do still occasionally whiff on that chip shot.

Colin

The song that comes in around 13:00 is heat good lord

Abigail Rytel

The idea of Eternal Scorigami implies the existence of Scorigami's villainous mirror: the Eternal Breaker, an NFL score that occurs for the second time ever.

Harrison Hodges

I've enjoyed the little Easter Eggs in this. It's cool that in throwing back to scorigami, you've included references to other parts of the pretty goodiverse.

Jay

@Xander When you have a bidet in your restroom, anything's possible!

Ben Peltz

Jokes on you Jon, I was already using the bathroom when I started watching this

Royalteal2

WE’RE 20 MINUTES IN AND JON HAS NOT ONLY IMPROVED ON THE SCORAGOMI VIDEO BUT HE HAS FOUND ANOTHER INCORRECT SCORE!?!?!?!

Nicholas Poer

So excited for all 4 parts to be out to watch this again in a feature length binge. Also, that is so wild about the late arrival of the 10-3 and 20-17 scorigamis.

Riley McPherson

Is it just me or does the AAFC sound like a human rights organization?

Matt

It's way too loud throughout.

Matt

You gotta lower the music when someone is talking.

Daniel Barrera

I've been waiting all day to get off of work for this and it did not disappoint! Bless you Jon and Alex-igami!

Mason

I can’t wait for more Score-a-gummy!

The Real Ben Shapiro

Shout out to the other wonderful names sharing that chart with Fred Chicken: “Harry Harris” and “Langdon.”

Ryan Petriello

WELCOME to the cathedral of football

Troy W

The "Double AFC" is such a fun brand for a football league. It has everything the XFL and USFL were trying to do with their branding, but it also has the extra bonus of "All-American" being a well known term for athletic excellence. It's patriotic, it's bragging about the leagues talent, and its a fun acronym to say out loud. What a shame that it's never been used again.

25:00 god how BADLY I wanted that Vikings Raiders game from 2023 to end in a scoreless tie in a /dome/

Ben Jenkel

Ladies and gentlemen, there is now a Z axis

Nate Wild

Better pull out the video and rescore it in Excel

Fox Fictions

Really hope the audio gets rebalanced before the public launch. It's so so loud

Kylie McInnes

I'm gonna have to bookmark the new series to post every new Scorigami now :'(

M

Gotta adjust the sound mixing on this one

Connor

anyone get devry vs troy state flashbacks with the inaccurate scores lol

Daniel Brandes

9:25 in. I really hope that the rouge is what is under that forbidden square.

Ryan Petriello

I'm assuming it's the defensive 1-point safety as outlined in the original Scorigami video, which is theoretically possible but is extremely unlikely

Drew Grant

For number of times achieved(have yet to start)?

Ben Jenkel

Exactamundo my friend

Russet Burbank

This video was missing an important part in the first few seasons: What was the first non-scorigami game? Probably that second 0-0 tie.

Robert

Tbf Jon the desperation multi lateral score happened THREE times in the 21st century. The Music City Miracle, that horrific New Orleans failed one, and then the Miami Miracle with Kenyan Drake and Gronk's infamous tumble.

Charles Davis

I would hear about Scoragami at a bar in Pittsburgh multiple times but kept cool about it because "hey, its a college bar, we probably all know Jon Bois". What caught me was when my co worker, about 33 years my senior, mentioned it.

Robert

Nope, he was from Minnesota I'm afraid

Stephen Mikalik

W&J Alum (Class of 2009) here. Our football program has a wild history. In addition to the game mentioned in this video, W&J was involved in the first (and only) scoreless tie in Rose Bowl history in 1922 against Cal. Also, in 2008, W&J became the first #1 seed to lose to a #8 seed in the first round (AT HOME!) of the NCAA D-III Playoffs. I was in the radio station (WNJR) producing the commercial breaks for the game & was flabbergasted by some of the plays run, including a embarrassing fake extra point in the first overtime.

Penis McDong

Oh snap there's some Wash & Jeff in this video? Sweet! I played at Allegheny a few years before you were at W&J.

Penis McDong

One of these nerd NFL coaches will probably do it on purpose one of these days.

Alex Artom-Ginzburg

Only Jon would find scoring issues like that multiple times

The heat death of the universe

Dr. Katz

How does one become a scorigomi expert

Dr. Katz

It can’t because a 1 point safety can only occur on extra point attempts

Declan Curran

check out their logo from 1922, that beast could house more dogs than Kobayashi in his prime

chili sunrise

“Also, I think it should be worth a point if you just… throw the ball through the goal posts.”

pizzaboy7296

Jon why the hell do you say "Connecticut" like "Connadicut" at 24:02. It's kept me up for almost 3 weeks Jon. I'm very sleep deprived Jon.

Dingers

He said a game ending with *one team having four points*. A game could be, say, 9-4 if you had a touchdown (6-0), one point safety (6-1), and each team gets a field goal (9-4).

Ben

Jon is back to claim the scorigami throne

Gocubbies

shoutout the score-a-gummy chart coming back!

KeegoTheWise

@26:19 we catch a glimpse of the "kansas city blues", so i have to channel my inner dork for a few minutes here. in keeping with missouri's tradition of naming professional sports teams after former local teams (bonus points if it's from a different sport!), the blues shared a namesake with the defunct minor league baseball team. and just like how the kansas city blues of the nfl would only exist for a year before being renamed and sold off, the second iteration of the chl's kansas city blues (minor league affiliate of the nhl's st louis blues and detroit red wings [also yes, *second* iteration]) would exist decades later for exactly one season, where they won the championship and promptly went under. all this confusion around the naming is fitting for a place like kansas city, missouri - a city whose name predates its neighboring state by nearly 70 years, yet confusingly was not officially named "kansas city" until over half a century after the city across the state line that was named after it. anyways, those kansas city blues (no, not those kansas city blues, the nfl 's kansas city blues) would change their name to the cowboys after one season - something the baseball blues also did in 1903, tho they changed it in 1904 - before being shipped off to cleveland and stripped for parts by the new york football giants a year later. it sucks to lose an nfl team, and it's unfortunately not the last time the state will experience such a loss. but when the universe saw the city lose its football cowboys, it took note. it took it nearly four decades, but it created a new nfl cowboys... in dallas. i can't imagine kansas citians liked that very much. you know who else didn't like that? the recently reactivated dallas texans, who now had to share a market with the cowboys. in fact, they liked it so little that they quickly relocated to that city with the weird repetitive naming conventions and nfl-sized hole before naming themselves after the mayor who liked to cosplay as a native at his boy scout summer camp - the kansas city chiefs

Adrian Forest

Pondering the future of the NFL, society, and humankind at large, huh? Wonder what that would look like...

Antonio Barry

Jon’s gonna have to edit that NFL office bit out unfortunately

Kaicat

Can I get a football smarty pants to tell me what accounted for that huge jump in TDs+unsuccessful conversions in late 1920s-early 1930s? (10:04)

Call Me B

Remembered I had a patreon and am now watching this after a 12 hour Odyssey from Meyers, California to home. God, I love this. Thank you Jon, Alex, and Secret Base 💙

issa

literally my only objection to this amazing series is that i can Only think of rickey henderson when that song comes on, it's like his personal anthem or something.

Boreal Tempest

Watching this again to kill time before it's available on Youtube.
