Greetings & salutations folks, Alex here. A few years ago, I worked on a series about the history of the Atlanta Falcons. A not-so-insignificant part of that history surrounds their involvement in Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots to cap the 2016 NFL season. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I later noticed that those Patriots entered that Super Bowl in the midst of a run of pulling off in seven consecutive games a feat that I perhaps wouldn't have figured any team in modern times had ever pulled off in any stretch of seven consecutive games, let alone heading into the Super Bowl.

That sent me down a rabbit hole in an attempt to suss out, among the NFL's first 118 conference champions, who entered the Super Bowl with the strongest tailwind. The teams that didn't merely make the playoffs and then emerge victorious after a couple hard-fought battles in the tourney to reach Super Sunday; but rather the teams that utterly dismantled the rest of the NFL and were soaring in their own stratosphere above the rest of the league.

To do this, I didn't constrain myself to their 118 full-season résumés -- instead opting to isolate more truncated portions of their schedules leading into the Super Bowl -- for a couple reasons. One is that many of those full-season résumés, for example the '72 Dolphins and '07 Patriots having won all their games en route to their AFC titles, are already well-known. The other is that I was curious to see how exactly the teams who were playing at the highest levels not across the entire season, but specifically the latter portion of the season entering the Super Bowl, fared in said Super Bowl.

Did any of 'em fail to close the deal like those '07 Pats, whose credentials across the entire season were unprecedented and beyond reproach, but who were also rather ho-hum relative to other conference champs specifically toward the end of the season? Or for those juggernauts does the Super Bowl turn out to be an inevitable and emphatic coronation?

Corrections:

• at 11:25 the Cardinals still resided in St. Louis at this point in time

• at 13:45 that pie chart's split should be 41:18/22:40

That pie chart for Super Bowl 51 at the end is way off. The Falcons first score came at 12:15 to go in the second quarter, the Patriots tied it at 28 with 0:57 left in regulation, and the winning score came at 11:02 in the OT period. So that'd be 22:40 spent tied, not 7:40. I think whoever made that must've thought the first score was in the first quarter instead of the second.

goodness gracious, way way way off indeed, galactical brain fart as though it was in fact 1st quarter -alex

The 2025 Pats would have been the most ‘72 Dolphins heirs to those guys. Particularly with that schedule.

No ‘89 Niners love after their absolute playoff demolition?

Cory

Great playoff run to be sure, but the end of the regular season was kinda blah. An upset loss to the Packers, a close win over the Rams, a few other comfy but not blowout wins. Same deal with 1991 Washington, another all-time great team that kind of coasted to the finish before annihilating their playoff opponents.

That close Rams win was one of the biggest and most dramatic wins of the decade. The Packers upset was a puzzler.

There’s an import error from 12:06-12:09, video freezes and the audio cuts. Hopefully not my end, I rescrubbed three times haha

As for the ‘91 champs, I think when the chase for Miami ended, they recalibrated and saved it for the playoffs. The ‘85 Bears took the Joe Robbie upset personally and tore into all opponents thereafter. Still wonder what a rematch would have looked like in New Orleans.

definitely not just you ducky. our newest video had it too, trying to figure out if there's something truly going on or we just had a couple unlucky uploads that needed a better quality control rewatch. sorry about this, but thanks for flagging it!
