Before anything else, a massive thank you to our Top Secret Agents for digging some rabbit holes that we could dive into. Last week, we put out a call to hear what was on their minds and unsurprisingly, they delivered. This is like a return to the mailbags we used to do, but tweaked to try and make it more Secret Base. We're happy to answer questions about ourselves and our work, but we're always more interested in digging into a topic of varying consequence.

In this edition, we got into some stuff that I don't think we would've landed on if left to our own devices. What would it take for relegation to make its way into North American pro sports? Where do our minds go when it comes to franchises moving or going defunct? WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH QUADRUPLE-DOUBLES? (all caps denotes Jerry Seinfeld voice).

As Seth says later on, we thought this was fun! What do you think? We'll probably return to this soon or try a variation of it or who knows what - but all with the goal of making some stuff informed by what you're into.

Whoa, good guess about me not being a math teacher. I switched to computer science a while back, but I still do my best to represent my math people. Thanks for the answer! Wemby is actually the reason I was thinking about this.

Speaking of relocation, it happened in the English Football Leagues in 2004. Wimbledon F.C. were relocated to Milton Keynes a "New Town" for financial reasons, becoming MK Dons. This was extremely unpopular with fans and with everyone in football. A phoenix club was formed called AFC Wimbledon which had played its way up the pyramid again. MK Dons used to claim Wimbledon's past honors like the FA Cup in 1988, but they don't anymore. Funny thing is MK Dons are in League 2 (4th Level) while AFC Wimbledon are in League 1 (3rd Level). I simplified this but a major team hasn't been moved since because this was so unpopular.

I tend to think you would need to absorb college sports into some sort of semi-pro/pro promotion relegation system (except maybe baseball since there’s such a massive minor league system)

Mr Sir

I'm kind of surprised the reason no one said relegation won't happen is because the owners wouldn't want to tank their own financial investments and cash cows.

I think there's probably still meat on the bone with regards to the Baltimore Colts in the form of that weird decade that the CFL tried to expand into the US and the Blatimore CFL team won the Grey Cup... right when the Ravens were announced. IDK maybe that's been covered too? Wasn't NFL Europe already kinda sorta their NFL G League while it existed?

i once talked with a co-worker from atlanta about how fun minor league hockey is and he had a hard time with the pitch purely because every hockey team he rooted for had gone. i didn't even know then that the minor league team left as well, yowch

At least for NBA/NHL, I don't think arena size would be a problem. Some pro arenas are pretty small, and lots of cities have good arenas for college sports. Omaha could handle an NBA team, at least for a few years. The relegation contender I think about is college football. I went to South Dakota State, so the split between FCS and FBS is an issue. I think it would be better to put conferences into tiers, with relegation/promo between them. You can always have a couple of non-conference games per team, in case their traditional rival slips into a different conference. Also, a transfer payment system like European football would be nice, so that at least SDSU gets something out of all the players starting there, and then entering the transfer portal the next year.

S. J. Sulzer

it's almost certainly the least-likely league to go for it, but my go-to for explaining relegation to other Americans is talking about baseball, because baseball is pretty much the only sport here that has as many tiers as the english football pyramid, so i'd say something like "well, let's say the angels and the white sox completely beef it one season, they've got the worst records, so they get sent down to AAA while MLB gets the toledo mud hens and s-wb red barons" (yeah, i know the red barons are long gone, i'm still bummed about it)

Dasamont

That makes sense to me. But I'm a European, so I'm probably biased. I think an important thing would also be that there would be some requirements for teams to move upwards. They would need an arena of a certain size, for example. Also, the team being relegated down would have to play against the team that was possibly moving up, to prove that they were strong enough, or do a bracket between the top 2 teams from the lower league and the bottom 2 from the higher league. They could possibly just start doing this at the bottom of the pyramid, where the two lowest league started doing relegation, then next year the next higher league starts doing it. That way it would take a few years to reach the top

What's the best triple double? What does that mean? What's the worst? Probably some cool stories in there.

The only time I can remember a player stopping short of a record was Jermaine O'Neal subbed himself out of a game when he got within a basket of Reggie Miller's single game pacers scoring record. I think it was in Reggie's last season
