JUST ASK by Jasmine Banks

My adorable husband, Micah, stood in the living room looking at me with that adorable smile. The one that means you might not know it yet, but eventually, you’ll see that I’m right.

“Just ask,” he said. “You got nothing to lose.”

“I don’t know… how you just call up someone outta the blue and ask for a job?”

I have a job now. I’ve just been thinking about some things I’ve seen lately. I’m wondering what would happen if I set aside my CNA work for a while and tried something different.

“I get it,” Micah looked at his phone to see what time it was.

He’s a mechanic at Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Brownsville and not one for being late. He’s worked there since he graduated a year before me in 2022. I got my CNA in high school and went right to work after we got married.

We got married June 24, 2023, a week after I turned 18. Not ‘cause we had to or anything. Not exactly. I grew up in the foster system and aged out on my 18th. Micah and I had been dating a year and knew we wanted to get married. Well, out of the system, I’d’ve had it hard on my own.

A year before, his grandmother had passed, and had a house. Micah talked to his folks, aunts, and uncles and worked out we could get married and live here.

I know that don’t sound romantic, but it felt like a storybook come true to us. It wasn’t he married me out of pity or something. We have been in love since we started dating.

Between his job as a mechanic and mine at the nursing home, we do okay. We don’t go hungry and we pay the utilities and taxes on time, plus we fix up the old house on top of that.

Mainly, we’re really happy.

But I’ve been seeing some things that I think me and Micah could be part of, if…

“I need to get going, but… look… if you ask and they say no… that’s the same as not asking. You don’t get hired. If you don’t ask, you can’t get hired. If you do ask, who knows?”

I knew he was going to be right, and he was sweet about getting to the point. “So, how do I do it? I don’t think a DM on IG is the way to get any doors open.”

I got up and went to give him a goodbye kiss, then he said, “They just made that company. They got a business license and all that. You can get a phone number off the internet probably… Right?”

I smiled. “Yeah, I’m sure…”

Micah smiled. “So… SwimFit Apparel… Look it up… and just ask… From what you say, they are good people with big hearts. Surely they’ll hear you out, at least.”

Be your best you!
