MORE LIKE BEFORE by Cindi Curtis

I’m at church now, going to my parents’ house next. I thought this would be a good time to check in.

I’ve skipped posting a few times simply because I feel like saying work is good, Michael is good, and my anxiety is only at the bothersome level would eventually start to get boring. But the truth is…

…work is good, Michael is good, and my anxiety is only at the bothersome level.

Okay let me backtrack. Things with Michael and me are good. Michael, though, is himself a little anxious. The idea of clients in Dubai and New Delhi is exciting, but working out how to handle everything isn’t obvious. Michael and I talked about it at length on Friday night.

Then on Saturday… I took some green beans I canned down to Mom and Dad's house. Once you get all set up to do canning, you might as well be efficient about it, so I bought more fresh beans from a farmers market so that I would have enough to share…

Dad caught wind of Michael’s situation as I was telling Mom about it. Good old Ray, the problem-solver!

“Mind if I call Michael?”

Danger alarms sounded! He’s been as goofy about Michael coming for Thanksgiving as Mom, and I thought he might be taking it up a notch, but I said it was okay.

He had an idea. I’ll summarize, but the discussion was pretty long.

Dad suggested Michael do a few things to see about creating space in his schedule where new clients could fit in. First off, he suggested contacting the grad student to see if he could start working in December. Then, if so, he could ask his boss in Nashville about returning to contractor status instead of being full-time. Between Michael, Jordan, and the grad student, Carter Ellis, the Nashville company would have a more rounded skill set to use as needed.

That, Dad proposed, would put enough space in the schedule to at least have a serious conversation with the two international companies. Then, he went a step further.

The rest of this Chapter is exclusive to Patreon.

He made an offer. “I’ll invest two months of Carter’s salary into your LLC on behalf of Cindi as her member contribution. That will give you some cushion until the grant kicks in.”

And… then… he… HAD TO… go there… “And, if you and Cindi get married before then, you can consider it a wedding gift!”

Michael laughed.

I did not.

Mom threw a pot-holder at him and said, “You can’t sell our daughter off that cheaply!”

If I had a pot-holder, I would have thrown it at her!

DOUBLE OR NOTHING by Roman Lenox

It rained on and off most of Saturday and has been somewhat cloudy today, so after church, I grabbed Wendy’s and came home. I had an idea that I tried to talk myself out of, but just a little while ago, I gave in and picked up my phone.

I called Hayes. “Hey… you busy?”

“Mostly not. What’s up?”

“What have you been doing?” I tried to sound friendly but I think it came off as prying.

“Unpacking boxes. We got me mostly moved in yesterday, so since we got home from Church, we’ve been deciding what I have that we can use and what to put in storage… Is something up? Do I need to go to the office?”

Hayes had moved in with Jordan in a nice apartment complex in Collierville. I had wanted to offer to help, but it seemed like I was crossing a line between work and personal life. hat was Friday, and I’ve regretted it since.

Today, I thought I’d… Well, you can just follow the conversation and figure out what happened.

“No,” I replied. “I was thinking you might be… maybe you don’t feel like cooking dinner after the moving weekend. I wanted to offer to help you move, but… anyway, what if I treat you to dinner?”

I thought “treat you to” sounded less personal than “bought you.” Hayes seemed to agree.

“Yeah? Well, Jordan had the same idea… We’re planning on going out to grab something… Applebee’s maybe…”

“Oh… Okay…” I wasn’t prepared for that possibility.

“You…” Hayes’s voice faltered, then she went on. “If you want, you could meet us?”

I decided to go for it. “Yeah, that will be great. And for real, my treat. Both of you. I should have offered to help move.”

“That’s sweet,” Hayes replied. “But it wasn’t bad. Two Men and a Truck… easy as could be.”

“So,” I said, “what time?”

“We were thinking 4:45 to get in before the dinner crowd, if there is one on Sunday night.”

“Okay… Can I come pick you up?”

Hayes spoke to Jordan for a few seconds. “Yeah, I’ll text you the address. Hey… thanks…”

There was something there in her tone right there at the end. Or probably, I’m reading into it something I wish was there…
