TEARS FLOWING by Jasmine Banks

I’m in the bedroom trying to calm down and fix my makeup. Micah made me cry. Mostly happy tears.

He just come in from work for lunch. I work three twelves each week at the nursing home, so when I’m home, he comes eat with me.

“Google Maps? What are you dreaming of today?”

“Paris,” I said looking up with a smile. “Come make up a story for us!”

“Again? I don’t know much about Paris.”

“You can make something…”

I make him play along with my dreams from time to time, and he’s really good. Today, he was even better.

“Okay, so we get off the plane. We’re so excited to see Big Ben… no… that’s London… To see the Arc de Triomphe and all that. We get an Uber… Do they have Ubber in Paris?”

“Let’s pretend they do.”

“We hurry to the hotel and take our bags to the room. The bed is as big as our kitchen… silk sheets and the carpet is so soft it’s like walking on air.”

I smiled. “Why’s the bed so big? We’re gonna spoon all night anyway!”

“That's how beds are in fancy hotels,” he said. “But we’ll come back to that… we want to go see the Eiffel Tower!”

Now, today, he did something different. He set up his camera and had us pose for a selfie. Then he got to fooling around with his phone and didn’t show me what he was doing as he went on with the story.

“So we go to this park and find a place to sit. The Eiffel Tower is right behind us and we take a picture… Look.”

He showed me his phone. He’d used AI to make that selfie of us into a picture of us in Paris.

“I’d take you there if I could. I mean it.”

“I know you would! You’re amazing!” The tears started flowing. “Micah, nobody ever loved me like you do!”

He smiled. “Nobody else ever will.”

Then I bust out ugly crying. “You’re the best thing ever.”

So, I’m crying ‘cause I’m so happy, mostly. But a little bit because deep down, I know it’s just a dream, and it probably won’t ever come true.
