Chapter 19: CLEAN HANDS, FULL HEART by Emma Knox

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how easy it is to get comfortable—how helping can start to mean just doing what’s right in front of you. Cleaning up around the apartments. Checking in on friends. Taking care of what’s mine. That’s all good and needed, but I kept feeling this pull to do a little more.

So today, I come down to the church a few blocks from the apartments to volunteer for their homeless program. They need help just sorting things out and passing out things to people coming in off the streets. And since they got a gym for their members, they let the homeless people use the locker rooms to shower up.

Well, today, I got to talking with the assistant pastor that runs their homeless ministry. He said they’d been praying to hire someone who could keep the clothes closet organized, restock the shelves, and hand out supplies, I felt that little nudge inside that said, this is it.

It’s not every day, and when school starts in January, I’ll be able to come in around my class schedule. But it’s something that matters. I asked him if I could try the job and he hired me on the spot. I gotta come back and do some paperwork, but I guess I have a job now!

Some people might look at handing out soap and socks and think it’s not much. But if you’ve ever gone without those things, you know how much they mean. A bar of soap can feel like dignity. A clean pair of socks can feel like care.

When I was growing up, I remember how my mom used to stretch every dollar—how she’d find a way to make sure we had what we needed, even when things got tight. There were times when we got help, too. More so after she passed and it was just me and Daddy.

So now, to be on the other side of that—to be able to hand someone something small but needed—it hits deep.

I think we all have moments when we want to make a difference but don’t know where to start. Maybe it starts here, with clean hands and open hearts, doing what’s right in front of us until the next thing comes along.

Be your best you!

Chapter 19 Emma. Good works can start with clean hands and an open heart. I salute you for your willingness to give time and energy to others. I think that quality is one of the reasons the Society wanted you. A good person, appreciating the blessings she had received, willing to pass it on. Take care and have a good day.
