Chapter 34: HANGING OUT by Merritt Gray

It’s Sunday afternoon. Everyone came back church and, after lunch, sort of settled down around the apartments. It looks like we’ll make New Hope Church—where Emma works—the place we attend regularly.”

Kent, Izzy, Hannah, Noah, and the new guy, Devon Collier, all ended up on the sofas at the front of the common area. Jacob and Addison headed to the kitchenette and sat at the table.

I talked to Jacob a little while, then Emma came out from her apartment and went to where Kent and the others were. Jacob and Addison decided they were going to walk down to the park, so I joined Kent and the others.

“Merritt,” Kent said as I approached, “I was just about to ask Devon what he thought about going to Belize with us… What do you think? Another guy on the job?”

I sat down on the arm of the sofa beside Emma. “We should ask Paul… I don’t see why not…”

Devon, though, was already shaking his head. “Slight problem… no passport… no ID… all that…”

Kent threw his head back and shook it. “Oh! Yeah, I forgot about that!”

Emma slid over on the sofa and tugged me down beside her.

Now, I want to shift the direction of this post. If you’ve followed along, you’ve noted that since the night I got locked out and we bumped into each other we’ve spent a lot of time with each other. Sometimes, just the two of us have gone out.

I should probably acknowledge that I like her. We get along very well, and there’s something really easy and comfortable about being with her.

And I think she feels the same way.

So, I guess you can say we’re in the talking stage. We’re not trying to rush anything—just seeing how things go, and taking it as it comes.
