Captain A. Caitlin Geven let the squawk of the comm replay through her thoughts.

“Mayday, mayday, ‘Nova’s Child’ hit. Drive out, hull leaking pressure. Mayday, mayday. Ping for vectors. Mayday, mayday!”

Geven’s hand hovered over the ping trigger on the nav console. “Imagine What” was a recon ship built for one, not a rescue ship. The airlock wasn’t designed to take on anyone like that.

She let her thoughts race through options as she waited for someone else to respond. She could manage the airlock issue if the other pilot could get himself to it.

“Nova’s Child” re-sent the mayday. Geven looked at the nav console. No one had pinged.

“Imagine What” had taken damage on her recon flyby. Cracks in the cockpit had forced her to retreat to auxiliary control and seal it off. Auxiliary control was hardly more than a roughed-in arrangement of older consoles jammed into the narrow passage between the cockpit and the airlock. The pilot of “Nova’s Child” would nearly have to sit in her lap.

Geven shook her head and looked at the comm, then said aloud to herself, “A rescue mission is not my build. This won’t work. Not a chance…”

She shook her head and pushed the ping button. Intercept vectors spun up on the nav console, and she flipped the reactor from standby to ready.

“‘Nova’s Child,’ stand by. Prepare to spacewalk. ETA…” She checked the console. “… make it 9 minutes.”
