Chapter 49: THANKFUL FOR A LOT by Emma Knox
I’m back home now and trying to settle into the week, but before I get too far ahead of myself, I wanted to look back on the weekend.
Belize was beautiful—hot, muddy, and full of meaning. We worked hard, laughed hard, and learned a lot about what those mangroves mean for the people who live there.
Monday, I went to the homeless ministry like normal, then came home and tackled the mountain of laundry we created on that trip. Addison and Izzy gave me a spare key so I could use their machines, too, and thank goodness for that. I washed half the mud in Belize right out of Merritt’s socks alone.
By the end of the day I had almost everyone’s clothes cleaned and folded. Felt good to do something simple after such a big weekend.
And now I’m already thinking about Thanksgiving, so I figured I’d say a few things I’m thankful for.
First is my Daddy’s work on the barges. It’s steady income and health insurance, and it’s helping him pay off that old debt from the landowner back in Vicksburg—the one tied to being a tenant farmer. Watching him chip away at it makes me proud. He deserves to breathe easy someday.
Naturally, I’m thankful for The Pay It Forward Society. They’ve given me money to get on my feet, room and board, which is like a whole job, and chances to do good things and see places I never imagined.
I’m also grateful for Merritt. He’s a good man—steady, fun, and never acts like I’m in the way. He helped me learn the ropes when I first got here. He even gave me his two-year-old MacBook on account that NYC SysCo issued him a new one. That meant the world to me.
Finally, I’m grateful for Hannah. She’s the best friend I’ve ever had. Growing up poor in Vicksburg, then dropping out and going to work at the casino, I never really got to know anyone more than to say hi. Hannah’s different. She’s accepting, smart, wise for her age, and fun. She makes life feel bright.
So, I’m standing here feeling very, very thankful. I believe I’ve really been blessed.
That’s it for now!

Chapter 50: LOOKING FOR WHAT? by Hannah Madison
Last Thursday, I accidentally tried to skip a man in line at the coffee shop. Not only did he overlook the mistake, but he bought me coffee. Then we met for breakfast the next day.
I was on a Pay It Forward Society project over the weekend, but last night, I had dinner with him. The conversation, the mood, everything… it was very satisfying.
Andy Cole, < @andy_cole_ai on Instagram > is from London. Thousands of miles and five hours away, once he goes home. And that will be soon.
But, not before one more night together. There’s a gala. He has tickets. He invited me to accompany him and I said yes.
Why? What are my expectations? What are his?
My dad is a high school physics teacher. My mom is a guidance counselor. Analysis was the food for thought I grew up on.
“What is the fundamental force behind the motion or phenomenon?” Dad would ask.
Mom would see things from the other, but equally valid, side. “The behavior? What needs does it meet? What motives align with the actions?”
For every action, both of them sought the “why” behind it.
And for this gala, for this almost certainly last meeting with a lovely man from London, I ask myself what is the “why” that led me to agree? What am I looking for? What need is it meeting?
I’ll have to get back to you on that…
Be your best you!
