This vignette is part of an epic saga told by Richard Realtrekker on Instagram. His IG page is < @richard_realtrekker >.
Thanks!
Captain A. Caitlin Geven checked her ship status one last time. Her comm had buzzed twice already requesting a sitrep.
Geven keyed the mic. “Standby for final.”
“Copy.” Richard Realmtrekker’s voice crackled from the console speaker.
Geven scanned the ship status display.
Capacitors: Full.Batteries: 98%, ChargingReactor temp: Idle.Ion Cannon: Charged, Ready, and LockedShields: 99%, Charging.
Geven keyed the mic again. “Mission lead, ‘Imagine What’ reporting ship status go for fly. Request permission to commence flyby. Please advise hostiles in target area. Copy?”
Realmtrekker’s voice cracked through the speakers again. “Clear to proceed. Scans show standard escort configuration.”
Geven punched in the intercept coordinates and eased the drive up to cruise. She smiled, always satisfied by the low hum of the main-drive engine and that slight vibration it sent through the hull.
She’d save the capacitors for the ion cannon and reserve the batteries for escape. Keeping the reactor temp as low as possible was a must if she planned on the high-speed escape she’d need.
“Imagine What” was a converted asteroid mining scout that she’d modified to do recon flybys for the fleet and the Ashari Space Miner Syndicate. She’d kludged up the drive from parts not really meant to go together. The inputs came from a fighter, the output from a huge freighter, capable of power unthinkable for her little vessel.
The main problem was getting enough power to it, which is where the batteries would come in. After that came the problem of dissipating the heat. The back-flash radiation, after passing through the shielding, was in acceptable range, specifically “allowed occasional exposure.”
Geven was going to cash in on one of those occasions. The fleet needed more data than they could get on long-range scans. She was going to buzz in for the flyby, then burn every joule of energy she could get from “Imagine What” to get away.
She wasn’t a pretty ship. But Geven knew exactly how far she could push her creation, and how hard she would push back.
Be your best you!

"Thank You" Message to Paying Supporters:
Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just at $100 per month.
Patreon members… You are covering a nice portion of that.
I believe most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. That means so much to me! I am honored and greatly moved.
While most of the content on AGI Stories is free and much of it is public, the hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!
Again, thank you very, very much.
