GOOD MORNING

So, it actually isn’t sunny here all the time! Still warm, though—Low 70s°F and rising.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, so I suppose I should let you know the plan. It probably won’t surprise some of you.

We are all going to the Good Neighbor Settlement House in Brownsville, Texas to serve meals for their guests. But, there’s a twist.

Josh came in last night with Sasha (surprising combo) with news. “Hey… slight change of plans for tomorrow…”

“You’re gonna love this!” Sasha was beaming.

Josh went on. “My father has been following our adventures close enough to know about our give-back work. He called last night… He tapped the family charity foundation to pay for catering to Settlement House. Not thawed, heated and served food… slicing turkey from the bone, food.”

I shook my head and muttered, “Wow…”

I couldn’t think of anything to add, and Josh went on. “He’s doing the same thing for two centers in Chicago. Ailana…”

His pause was powerful. I took note and looked at him.

“Pops has been noticing what you’re doing. And why you do it. You’ve inspired him. He has a Christmas gift for you…”

“I don’t understand,” I said.

“He’s going to set up a foundation called “Imagine What” that will fund programs for homelessness in Northwest Indiana. Starting with East Chicago. Mom is going to badger all the country club wives into adding to the foundation’s endowment. It will grow.”

Sasha’s smile was huge. “Ailana… This is amazing, right?”

So, here I stand the morning after. Humbled. Excited. Awed. And thankful that all my little diary posts have done something nice.

See you soon.

BREAK TIME

I have been actually working this morning. And I feel like I have managed to get a lot done.

Downstairs sounds like a construction site. Saws. Hammers. Drills. People talking loudly.

It probably sounds like that because it is a construction site. Yeah… The first phase of the remodel is going well. Sasha and the contractor are sure the new office space and the efficiency unit for Jasmine and Micah will be ready by the end of next week.

Essentially, they took the living room of Dad’s old unit, put up some walls, added the kitchenette (which backs up to where Dad’s old kitchen was) and made that the office. Something about a bathroom, also.

Where the old kitchen was is now Jasmine and Micah’s new kitchen and living area. Dad’s old bedroom is where the new bedroom and bath are. Something about a small laundry space, also!

LOL

This is why I don’t do architecture!

Grammy’s old bedroom will become part of one of the new two bedroom units. Construction on all that will start as soon as the office and efficiency units are done.

And, there you go! Remodel 2025 update delivered!

I’ll be back later, of course! See you soon!

WHAT’S THE PLAN? by Kirina Yung

I’m sitting here talking to Ailana Geven. About Thanksgiving.

All week, I have been planning to make a plan for Thanksgiving. I didn’t. The closest I came to a plan was when I called Eli Park to see if he had plans. He didn’t, and I said I’d call him today if I came up with something.

I might be doing that right now.

“Ailana, I saw your post this morning about serving meals.”

“Oh, wow. That’s a nice surprise!”

I told her I follow her closely. I didn’t tell her that I’m trying to figure out how to insert myself into her friend group.

She still seemed surprised, but deflected the discussion to the plan. “We’re all going over around 9:30 to wait for the caterer. Josh’s father arranged everything. We just need to be there to help the staff.”

I then told her why I called. “I was wondering if I could join you? I… actually don’t have anything going on. Sea Glass Gallery, of course, is closed.”

“Of course you can!” Her voice sounded genuinely excited. “The more help, the better!”

We talked about the details, then I added something more. “Ailana, would it be okay if I brought… a friend?”

“Absolutely,” she replied. “Like I said, the more the better.”

As soon as I’m done here, I’m calling Eli. I have a plan now.

GOOD NIGHT

Wednesday has come to an end, and I have to say it’s been good. I got some work done, all the while feeling extremely grateful for Josh’s father’s generosity.

Kirina Yung called earlier to ask about being part of tomorrow’s work at the shelter. Of course, I said yes! How awesome to have more help!

As you can see, I finally put on more than a t-shirt. Dad wanted me to come over so Grammy could show me how she’s fancied up her kitchen. Did it. Done. She means well, but… she demands so much attention, it is exhausting.

After the visit, Jason and I came back here and made sandwiches. There was a little chili left from Sunday. Not anymore!

Now, we are spinning down for the day. Tomorrow, I’m not sure what my posting schedule will be. I imagine there will be a lot to share from the community center, so don’t be surprised if my normal schedule is adapted to the day!

With that, let me close out.

May you recognize the people and moments in your life for which you can be thankful, and may you be someone others are thankful for.

Good night.

Be your best you!
