Chapter 10: LOOKING UP by Devon Collier
I’m not going to try and play it off. The end of 2025 was rough.
I wrapped up my associate’s degree in Engineering Technology just in time to be visiting a friend when my mom and stepdad’s house burned down. She didn’t make it. He tapped out and disappeared, leaving me living in my car.
I got help from Habitat Housing. Specifically, Izzy Duffy knew what numbers to call in what order to get replacements for my birth certificate and Social Security card. Even during the recent government shutdown.
She helped me get a roof over my head, too. I’m living in one of the micro-apartments at Crossroads.
That’s where I met Kent Marlon, who hired me to go around with him and pretend to do work that helps his company. I do a lot of cleaning up, loading, unloading, and things like that. I also can rough in wiring on outlets and switches, but he has to check them all.
We do a lot of volunteering, too, for Habitat Housing. I don’t get paid for that, but it feels like giving back to some folks who got me back on my feet.
As far as anything like a social life, that’s kind of a big fat nothing. Of course, I’d like to have a girlfriend, but… The right one hasn’t come along. And given my job and living situation, I probably shouldn’t be in a hurry.
On a side note in the realm of social life, when I went to Habitat Housing for help, one of their staffers sort of acted real friendly with me. There was a good vibe, to be honest. Shay Ryder…
She’s kinda quirky, but I think it’s cute. For a few hours, I sort of thought maybe something could come of it once I got established.
That was before I learned she has more money than most states in the US—well, her family does. Not exaggerating, if you compare net worth to GDP.
But, I guess she sort of feels sorry for what happened. She texts me every day or so, just to say hi. She makes me laugh sometimes.
A couple days ago, I guess she was thinking about me. She sent one of her trademark messages.
The rest of this Chapter is exclusive to Patreon.
The message went something like this: “Hey, I was going to text you this morning, but I didn’t know what to say, then at lunch, I got as far as getting my phone out at lunch, but couldn’t think of anything other than to say hi, so I waited til now. Well, anyway, hope you’re doing good. Sorry for being so weird! LOL.”
I think it’s cute that she’s so honest—and the truth is, I wish she was just a normal girl working at a non-profit. I like her security team, too—bunch of nice guys as far as I can tell. And I guess going out with her would be like a date where the big brother came along, too. But, I’ll never know about that.
Crossroads is a cool place to live. There’s a big community room you can go through to get in or out. The micros have stairs and a door to the street, but it feels more like a fire escape than an entrance.
The big common area really makes living there feel good. Everyone is nice and thoughtful of each other. There are four girls—Emma, Hannah, Addison, and Izzy—living in two of the three two-bedroom units. Emma seems to be dating one of the guys, Merritt, and Izzy is for sure dating Kent.
Hannah is really nice, and maybe I’d be interested in her if my finances were stronger. To be honest, pushing a broom doesn’t do much for your confidence, if you know what I mean. Addison seems to hang out a lot with Jacob, one of the other guys.
It ends up a lot of times that Noah, Hannah, and me will be hanging out while the couples and might-be couples sit off in other parts of the common area. I don’t know what to compare it to, but it feels like a big family that gets along well.
Anyway, that’s where I am on things. Next year has to be better, and Kent says not to worry about it too much. He claims I’m pulling my weight on the job, so I’ll take it and keep going.
