GETTING READY by Cindi Curtis

Good morning, everyone, and happy first Sunday of 2026. I won’t take long today—Michael and I are going to an earlier service, and I’m obviously not ready.

After we got back from Bartlett last night, I went on Zillow and did their five-minute mortgage pre-qualify thing. Tomorrow I’ll follow up, but it looks like I’ll be good to go pretty quickly. Google says it’s possible to get a mortgage set up in a couple of days, and I’m going for it!

I can’t keep living in a motel, and—contrary to what a lot of people think—just crashing at Michael’s condo isn’t an option for us. So I’m going to take some PTO later this week and see what can happen.

For now, I need to finish doing my hair and getting dressed. I just texted Michael (not FaceTime!) to say I’d be ready in about half an hour.

There might be a Sausage McMuffin with Egg in the near future, too!

See you next time.

NEW YEAR, OLD MOM by Hayes Markel

After the ball dropped on New Year’s Eve—when the TV announcer told everyone to kiss somebody for luck—nothing has been the same.

We were gathered at my apartment. Cindi and Michael were there. Jordan was sitting beside Carter. I was beside Roman. Of course.

We kissed. It was a real kiss, a kiss I think we’ve both been avoiding for a long time.

Two things happened:

We stopped pretending we were just coworkers.

Everything became scary.

But we are going forward. Somehow, we thought we could carry on as usual with our relationship off the books and private.

So here we are out shopping. We’re having fun—looking over our shoulders to make sure we don’t see anyone we know—while quietly embracing the fact that we care deeply for each other.

Then, my phone rang. My mom was calling.

“Hayes! I’ve not heard from you this year!”

“It’s been three days, Mom.”

“Four, young lady. When you didn’t call on New Year’s Day, I was worried.”

I should have called. I didn’t. I was processing everything that happened the night before.

Mom went on to ask about New Year’s Eve and how I spent it. I told her that Jordan had organized a gathering. She wanted to know who all was there…

“Well, did your boss come, too?”

I couldn’t lie. “Yeah, he was there. He and Michael, Jordan’s boss, are becoming friends.”

That was a bit of an exaggeration. They would like to do that. Michael is buried under work.

“Well,” she said, “I hope you behaved yourself.”

No clue what she was implying. I’m sure my concerns about being with Roman made me prickly.

“Mom, I’m shopping right now. I’ll call you tonight.”

So, let’s just add on one more layer of tension to what Roman and I are trying to work through. I turned to him and shook my head.

“Keeping this secret is going to kill us.”

He forced a smile. “We’ll figure out something.”

Be your best you!

GETTING READY by Cindi Curtis. Actually, I'm kind of glad to read that crashing at Michael’s condo isn’t an option for us. Bravo, Cindi, to you and Michael. "Sausage McMuffin with Egg in the near future" sounds almost as good a way to start the day as a half dozen Gibson's Donuts. Thank you for the update. Take care.
