Chapter 27: AS I SEE IT by Eric Marsten
You might be surprised to see me sharing my thoughts here. And you might think I’m here to talk about Jacob Brown kissing Addison Magee on Christmas.
That was an energy-filled moment, no doubt. But I think Jacob was more concerned than he needed to be among that group of people.
I have a different kiss to talk about.
I left the Secret Service to head up a six-man security detail for David Ryder’s daughter, Shay. Since August of 2024, I’ve come to be close to her. Of course, I keep it professional, but I can’t help but partially think of her as a little sister.
She’s somewhat awkward in situations where she doesn’t know what to expect. Sometimes, when she’s going to a meeting, she rehearses what she’ll say with me as I’m driving her there. The other guards say the same thing.
Over the last month or so, she’s talked about Devon Collier a lot. For some reason, she felt immediately connected to him, at ease in a way I’ve never seen before.
We ran him through a couple of background checks and he was totally clean. His story about the house fire checked out. End of report.
More than once, Shay asked me how to go about getting things going with Devon. I made a few suggestions, all of which amounted to being honest and letting him know how she feels.
In her way, that’s what she did. From where I was watching, it looked like she just asked if he wanted to kiss her under the mistletoe. And, I guess I can say “End of report” there, as well. Of course he did.
A week later, they moved into new territory. Ray Becker reported that they skated and talked, and left Rockefeller Center agreeing to try dating socially. I’ll add that Ray has a good feeling about Devon, same as I do.
The way I see it—based on firsthand observations and Shay’s constant reports about their text messaging—Shay has latched on to someone who makes her comfortable. Someone who likes her quirky ways, and gently leads her away from putting herself down to just relaxing and being herself.
The way I see it, that’s about as good as anyone can hope for. I’ll say it again. End of report.
Be your best you!
