Chapter 28: ANOTHER TWIST by Devon Collier

I just left a meeting with Tom Jenkins in a little conference room connected to the Crossroads of History Theater he owns. Besides that, Tom has a number of real estate investments—a couple of small offices, several small apartment buildings, and the units Stop-Gap Housing uses for their program.

“Devon,” he said, “thanks for meeting with me… have a seat. And relax—I’m asking you to do me a favor…”

Well, that was a surprise. I wasn’t sure what kind of favors I was in a position to grant.

“Thank you,” I said. “I’m not sure what I can do for you, but I’m willing to try.”

He went on to talk about his properties and his need for someone who could do basic handyman stuff. “I need a guy. You know how everyone says, ‘Oh… I have a guy for that…’ I want you to be my guy. There’s a lot of work, every day. I’m kinda over calling fifteen different repair companies. I’ll give you the list and what you can’t fix, you call. What do you think?”

“I’m very open to it. Kent’s been letting me help him, but more, I think, charity than need. So, yeah…”

“There’s a catch…”

I sort of wasn’t surprised that there was one. Just what it was.

“The job is only for five years max, pending our mutual satisfaction. In those five years, you have to go back to college and complete a bachelors. Your compensation is the room you have, utilities, internet, all that… I’ll pay all of your tuition and education costs, at a public college or university, but you have to make Bs or better. I’d assume you’ll want to advance your Engineering Technology associates degree, but you can decide later. And… on top of all that, you’ll earn minimum wage. I think it’s a solid offer, if you have going back to school in mind.”

“I do,” I said.

It took me about nine seconds to agree to it. That mutually agreeable thing means I could call it quits. I just had one question.

The rest of this chapter is exclusive to Patreon.

“Mr. Jenkins, I know Stop-Gap Housing works closely with Shay Ryder. Can I ask you if she had anything to do with this offer?”

Tom seemed puzzled. “Shay Ryder? Why do you ask?”

“She and I have become close recently… since she helped me get my IDs worked out… I was just wondering…”

Tom smiled. “I’m glad to hear that. I always felt like she was a little bit of a loner… but no… I haven’t talked to her since early December, to tell you the truth.”

“Okay… I just thought I’d ask.”

“No,” Tom replied. “I was telling Addison—I suppose you know she works for me—I needed someone, and she said I should talk to you.”

“Addison?” I was really relieved that Shay wasn’t using her influence to help me, and I suppose you can understand why.

Tom nodded. “Addison said you would be a good choice, and your your associate’s degree would mean you at least had a decent lay of the land.”

That’s about it. So, pretty much today, I started working for Tom Jenkins. He had a fancy title for me: Facilities Maintenance Director.

Chapter 28: ANOTHER TWIST by Devon Collier. That is a nice opportunity. But a lot of responsibility. I could see Kent maybe putting in a word for you, too, along with Addison. Five years? Okay. Handy responsibilities, not full superintendent duties. This is a great gesture on his part and mutually beneficial. Stroke of luck, sir. Do your best.
