Chapter 30: EARLY NIGHT by Merritt Gray
I’m calling it an early night. It feels like it was a really long day, but to be honest, it was more or less routine.
Things at NYC SysCo were typical. If there were any bumps in the road, they had to do with me negotiating transfers on the MTA to get to a site in Staten Island.
But if you miss a train, there’s always another coming.
Emma and I were just sitting in the common area and the conversation sort of faded out. She’d told me about work. I told her about things in the office.
Then it was like an invisible cloud settled over me. I just felt my energy drain away. Nothing out of the ordinary other than the holidays and three days of back-to-work catching up.
I just finished brushing my teeth and am about to crawl into bed, but Emma just snapped a really cute selfie of her smiling from her kitchen holding up a muffin left over from breakfast. No caption, but it was really sweet.
I snapped “good night” back to her.
As I was closing the app, I saw the name of that girl I met in Memphis—Jordan Warner. It’s funny how Snapchat cycles who it shows you. I’m sure there’s an algorithm.
I haven’t thought about her in ages, but seeing her name made me wonder how things with her senior project turned out.
That led my thoughts to Hannah and the guy from London. And Emma and the man she met back in Vicksburg at the railroad tracks.
Our lives intersect with people. Moments sometimes. Days sometimes. Even weeks.
Then we move on. I guess I’m hoping people I come into contact with with are a little better off because of it. Or at least no worse.
I try to leave the cashier with a smile. I try to thank the server. I have no idea if it means anything, but part of me thinks it does.
And the rest of me hopes.
Be your best you!

The thank you message that follows is exclusive to supporters…
"Thank You" Message to Paying Supporters:
Let me begin by saying how grateful I am for your engagement with the content. Your likes, comments, questions, and encouraging remarks keep me going, even on days when I'm pulled in multiple directions all at once.
I believe most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. That means so much to me! I am honored and greatly moved.
Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month.
At this time, most of that cost is being covered by Patreon members like YOU.
While most of the content on AGI Stories is free and much of it is public, the hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!
I believe I have found ways to give you more exclusive content, while still making the site meaningful to visitors and passersby.
Again, thank you very, very much.
