IT’S A PLAN by Jordan Warner

IT’S A PLAN by Jordan Warner—A lot has happened since Carter and I carried out our coup to hire Hayes and free Michael up to do what he’s best at. Let me clarify “he’s best at.”

Michael is by far a better word person than he is a paperwork, bookkeeping, legal forms, state reports kind of person person. So in that sense “best at” is pointing to his skill set.

Furthermore, Michael’s word magic is tops. Hands down, he’s the best wordsmith in the company.

So freeing him up? Win all around.

After embracing the idea to hire Hayes, he went right to work preparing us for growth.

“Okay, the topic is new prospect conversion,” Michael said, “and everything I’m going to share is based on how you two handled Satellite Safe-Systems.”

“Have we heard back?” I asked.

“Just a note to say it looked good,” Michael replied then went into the plan. “I took what you did and unpacked it, then created a folder on Google Drive called ‘Prospect Templates.’ In that folder is a folder called ‘New Prospect NAME’ that is the actual template.”

Hayes caught the idea. “So new prosepct… Duplicate the folder, change ‘NAME.’”

“Right. Inside that folder are other folders and a step sheet with everything outlined. We just follow the step sheet until we have our idea map ready for the client. Gray is for everything they send us before we work it. Green is for anything to do with money and that will be Hayes’ responsibility. Blue is Carter’s folder. Pink is Jordan’s. Purple is mine. Everything from gray goes into those folders. Red is for stop… It’s for the final client-ready deliverables. There’s a straw man idea map and cover letter there, ready to be populated.”

“Sounds good,” Carter replied.

“It’s what you did with Satellite Safe-Systems. Just with colors and Hayes added. Any questions?”

I swear I was trying to stay serious, but I had to ask. “Why am I pink?”

Michael acted like he had actually planned it out. “To match your nails.”

Of course, we backtracked and looked at the folder, but having come up with the system to work up a bit for Satellite Safe-Systems, it all made sense.

LOOKING AHEAD by Carter Ellis

We are on our second round of coffee now, and we’re still mapping things out for ClearStream. Jordan won’t let me go on until I tell you something.

While the four of us are here meeting, Cindi Curtis is off with the realtor executing the contract to submit an offer on a house. I know this is a big step for Cindi, and I’m sure it’s going to be awesome.

After Michael laid out a plan we can use to work up prospects quickly and efficiently, he went on. “Okay, let’s talk about… say… a five-year plan.”

“What are you thinking about?” Jordan replied.

“This is going to seem impulsive, but I’ve prayed about it… talked to Cindi about it… talked to my parents… So, hear me out.”

He started off by saying that we were doing a lot of things really well and the influx of referrals proved that. He then went on to say talent alone would not be enough in the long run.

“I think we have a solid core team right here at this table. Carter and Hayes, I want to bring you two into the LLC as members. That seems equitable to me. I like the team mindset.”

Hayes looked at him, clearly surprised. “I’m honored, but I’d push back to say we shouldn’t try to run this thing as a committee. You need to call the shots. It was you for a long time before any of us came along.”

Michael agreed to be the Managing Member and, after a little discussion about tax implications, liability, and that sort of thing, Hayes and I—humbly—agreed to come on board.

“My second idea is about credibility. Outsiders are going to see a bunch of young adults calling themselves a company. I think we all need to up our game with some letters after our names. Carter’s on the way…”

“Master’s degrees?” Jordan said.

Michael nodded. “Hayes, Fogelman is a good program at U of M. Jordan and I can get into the comm program like Carter.”

Then he added, “So, let’s work up a budget that includes tuition for the members… How about that?”

Details TBD, but we all agreed.

Be your best you!

IT’S A PLAN by Jordan Warner. Coup? I'd say you both saw a great opportunity and went for it. Can't beat the skills of the best wordsmith in the company. Those are skills. That project outline template is a great idea, Jordan. I have to agree that your boss knows what he is doing. I love that he said pink was to match your nails. 😊.

LOOKING AHEAD by Carter Ellis. Michael is absolutely right about credentials. Especially when dealing with business clients. That is incredibly generous of him to offer you full partnership just like that. Incredible. Fogelman does have a great MBA program. U of M Global will let you do the whole track online. Very nice. Expensive, though, all four of you at once? Hmm. maybe you could qualify for a small business expansion grant under SBA, or one of their partner foundations, that would cover all of the tuition under professional development. Hmm. Anyway, I agree that is a solid plan. Very interested in the details once you iron them out. Good luck to you all.
