Chapter 33: MAKING PLANS by Noah Vale
Chapter 33: MAKING PLANS by Noah Vale—It’s Friday afternoon and I’m alone in the apartments. Everyone is at work, except me—I work tonight. Shift work is sometimes brutal.
Especially if you have two weeks’ notice to get your schedule changed so you can go to Africa for the weekend. By the way, role-play this one… Walk into your boss’s office and explain that you’re bopping to Africa for the weekend, but you’ll be back in time for a Monday morning shift.
He already had me scheduled for the Friday we leave, but we’re allowed to trade shifts with other medics. I worked it out.
Tuesday, I was partnered with an Interim EMT who’s covering for a lady named Kaitlyn who’s out on maternity leave for the rest of the month. We did all the smalltalk things. She is from California, has done some medical relief work abroad and—relevant to my story—is working for PriorityCare Ambulance Services so she can stay in NYC for a while and is looking to pick up extra shifts.
She took my Friday shift, and the boss said he’d not schedule me until Monday night, so I’m good to go.
Maybe because of my proximity to the medical world, but the problems with bad water aren’t new ideas to me. And I’m not talking about water that some communities have tastes like sand or lime… That water is usually not contaminated with pathogens.
In a lot of places in the world, safe and accessible drinking water is not the norm. Going to a community well or stream is just the first obstacle. Filtering the muck out and then boiling it to kill germs usually follows that.
So we’re supposed to be raising awareness by going there. Installing a few solar-powered filters will help a few people—sure. But maybe someone who follows our story will get motivated to make donations or get involved, too.
That’s it for me… I’ll be packing up our hopefully-not-need medical kit in the days to come. I think Paul’s saying “wheels up at 6:15” a week from today.
See you next time.
Be your best you!

"Thank You" Message to Paying Supporters:
Let me begin by saying how grateful I am for your engagement with the content. Your likes, comments, questions, and encouraging remarks keep me going, even on days when I'm pulled in multiple directions all at once.
I believe most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. That means so much to me! I am honored and greatly moved.
Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month.
At this time, most of that cost is being covered by Patreon members like YOU.
While most of the content on AGI Stories is free and much of it is public, the hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!
I believe I have found ways to give you more exclusive content, while still making the site meaningful to visitors and passersby.
Again, thank you very, very much.
