GOOD MORNING

I am well on my way to being ready for a somewhat slow, gentle day. I hope you, too, can have a chance to enjoy an easy day.

Normal Sunday coming up. There’s already been one coffee, a shave, and a shower. Making great headway.

I’m looking forward to getting back to the church we attend here—Chapel by the Sea. I think having a steady church is one of those parts of a community that says, “This is your place. You belong here.”

Before I close out my good-morning post, I’ll add that Jasmine pushed through the process to start working on her BSN through Indiana State University’s online program. Her program starts later this week, and there’s a lot of flexibility built in.

She’s worried that it might interfere with her AGI work. Sasha said it didn’t matter when she did what—that none of us punch a clock. Rather, we do the work when we do it. Walks on the beach? Sure! Online classes? Also sure!

I guess that’s enough for now… I’ll check back after church—see you then.

AFTER CHURCH WALK

Church this morning felt like the final course in “being home.” The message was about looking into the new year through the lens of God’s design, not our own.

I think people latch onto inspirational points differently. For me today, the part of the design that I connected to was that we, the creations, are the agents of change and care within creation. Helping others and stewardship of the environment are part of the design.

That’s what I walked away with today.

Speaking of walking, we are taking a little stroll along Channel View Road this morning. I added a map view of the area.

Sometimes we go the other way and end up at Sea Ranch Marina (which isn’t labeled in this image—it’s the same place as “The Original Dolphin Watch”).

I think we are all still thinking about Sasha and Jasmine’s report about the AGI Group budget, so we are doing a new thing today that Micah dubbed “Second-Floor Lunch Party.”

The Banks, Everetts, and Ryans (who have the three apartments there) are going to “prepare to share” food. We’ve already seen the remodel, but today we’ll have a second look at how the decorating has turned out. We’ll probably end up in the AGI work area eating for a little while.

After lunch? Well, it’s cloudy, but not too bad today. Maybe a walk outside? Maybe some quiet reading? Maybe both?

I’ll check back in tonight, so see you then!

A LITTLE EXTRA by Allen Geven

Sometimes surprises are a good thing. Not like trying to crank your truck and suddenly finding out the battery is dead. That happens too.

Today, Mom said she was going back to her room and didn’t want anything for dinner—meaning she’ll want something around 8:00—so I thought I’d walk over to Whiting Street and see if Micah wanted to go to Grapevine Café and split some nachos. He’s a good kid, and I don’t want him to feel lost in the chaos that seems to be part of the AGI norm.

I’d just come from my house when a man in an Accord stopped and rolled down his window. “Got a second?”

“Sure.”

He got out and said his name was David Callahan. He is a property manager for a lot of rentals in the area.

“I’ve seen you here a few times before. Do you live here year-round?”

I said I did. He asked about my work. I told him I was a facilities and plant manager at the Coastguard Station.

“That,” I went on to say, “is bureaucracy for a handyman.”

“I thought you had the look like you knew how to keep up a home,” he said.

“I’m 56… comes with the territory.”

We talked a little and he then made a proposal. He needs someone to do walkthroughs when people check out of the vacation rentals.

“I have some cleaning crews that send me a list of maintenance needs. I have a maintenance crew that fixes them. But I want someone between the two to make sure it’s actually needed and to make sure the maintenance crew doesn't go overboard.”

He said they had repainted a whole wall after repairing some drywall where a mirror anchor had come out. “I live in Houston. I can’t check up on every turnover.”

Cutting to the chase, after a long chat, he contracted with me to go between the cleaners and the maintenance crew to check on things. “I need an invoice… $20 a unit… I do everything by the books with a paper trail…”

Before I grab Micah for nachos, I’m going to see if Clay can walk me through invoicing the guy first. This is new ground for me, but I’m excited.

GOOD NIGHT

How better to end a slow, steady day than wrapped in a sheet, wearing a big cheesy smile, and sporting out-of-control hair? Today really was the respite I didn’t know I needed.

I told you about lunch after church, and that went off great. We enjoyed the food, but the company was even better.

Dad came by later, chatted with Clay about picking up some work for one of the rental property management companies, then dragged Micah down the street for nachos. He couched it as rescuing Micah from the chaos.

Jason and I almost went to the beach, but we let the sketchy weather change our minds. We did take a walk around the neighborhood, then settled down in his living room to pass the rest of the day.

Dinner? Leftovers from lunch! There was plenty.

After dinner, we put a YouTube music playlist on the TV and talked more about days to come. We talked about the studio again. We talked about trips and how we could connect them to work that we hope Naomi sends our way. We had a nice couple-time evening looking at where we’ve been and—where we’re heading. We’re still on track.

I’ve been back in my condo for about an hour. I cycled some laundry, opened my email, and made a work plan for tomorrow. Done. I’m ready for the week to come.

And I hope you are, too. I also hope you’ll be part of mine! It means so much to me that you are interested in my day-to-day routine. Thank you very much.

May you find your place in God’s design, learning how to be the best version of yourself possible. May you prosper, be at peace, and filled with joy.

Good night.

Be your best you!

AFTER CHURCH WALK. Stewardship of the environment and helping others is definitely part of God's design. You have always been a good example of that with the giveback days. Thank you for mentioning the service message. And the map. You do look good in floral print dresses, I will say. Thanks for the update and have a great afternoon.

A LITTLE EXTRA by Allen Geven. Good afternoon, Allen. So, this man David Callahan, hired you to manage the maintenance crews and cleanup crews after residents leave? So, he is hiring you as an onsite supervisor of some kind? Just confirming the assigned work is done...as assigned? Ok. Good luck to you, sir.

A LITTLE EXTRA by Allen Geven. So, Micah now lives in South Padre, but he works in Brownsville? Right? But Jasmine is now full time at AGI? Am I caught up?
