GOOD MORNING

Happy Saturday, everyone. I hope you are planning a great day. I am.

Geoni is here already. We have a plan to go shopping for some things for the new studio, so she woke me up and started coffee while I was showering. You can thank her for the picture.

“I’m going for a bath product vibe…” She handed me the hairbrush. “Okay, do something that a model would do.”

I smiled. She snapped. Done.

After the shot, I continued getting ready and she put my coffee on the vanity. “Let me ask you something.”

“Sure.”

“What do you really think about the idea of adopting an older kid?”

I didn’t hesitate to answer. “For the kid, it will be a huge blessing. Jasmine has said how she felt watching the calendar run down before she was aged out of the foster program.”

“You sound like there’s a but,” she replied.

“But, it’s a lot of work for you guys, and you only get a few years before they go off to college.”

“We thought about that. We are hoping to find someone who won’t have any other family. We can be their family through high school, college, and beyond. Maybe after a year or so, we’ll adopt a second.”

We talked about their plan, and I had to admit that if they found a kid who was without any family, it would be great to grow with them into adulthood.

By then, I was dressed and ready for the day. I’ll check back in with an update later, so keep your eyes open!

MR. AND MRS. KUMAR by Min Aurora

Tonight, my sister, Anika, married my former colleague and friend, Amir Kumar. It was truly an international event.

His parents and my parents came from the U.S. He had many other relatives here in Hyderabad. Anika and I had relatives from Bangalore, Ludhiana, Mangalore, and other places here in India.

The service was doubly long. Everything was said in English, then repeated in Telugu. It was lovely, to be honest.

But when the pastor said, “Nēnu ippuḍu mimmalni bhāryā-bhartalugā prakaṭistunnānu,” I celebrated for several reasons.

My sister was married to a wonderful man. I couldn’t be happier for her. Watching her smile next to him, I realized she’d found what I hope to find for myself someday.

I also celebrated the fact that the service was over. I actually enjoyed dressing up traditionally. Not so much the henna, but that was an expectation of my grandparents, aunts, and uncles. I am happy I honored the tradition, but…

Okay—ancestors honored, photos taken, earrings survived. Can we go home now? I did the tradition. I wore the dress. I smiled until my cheeks hurt.

I love my sister. I love what this means for her. But if I’m completely honest, this was a necessary task leading to… going home.

I’m ready for a hot dog and root beer bought from a street vendor with a mustard-stained apron. I’m not sure if they have those in Brownsville, Texas, but I could improvise with a gas station dog and a fountain drink.

I loved my work with Health for Humanity. My trek through rural Malaysia gave me time to think, and what I kept coming back to was that I was ready for a change.

My now-brother-in-law and my sister have put together something pretty amazing for the future. The work will feel like what we did in Tibet, but with air conditioning and clean running water.

I’m ready. And I’ll get there before them. They have a honeymoon to attend to.

EARLY FOR WORK by Emily Amos

Exclusive to Patreon

I’m not supposed to work for another hour, but I walked down from the apartment anyway. My mother is doing business already, and I didn’t feel like being there.

I don’t like being home any time when she’s working, but I really hate her late-night work. The knock on the door jars me. The turning of the deadbolt… The squeak of the door hinge… Then muttered voices of strangers—usually men’s voices that are hushed and hurried.

So, today, I left. I pulled the blankets and my pillow off the sofa and put them behind it, just so the living room wouldn’t look like it was my bedroom. It is, but I didn’t see any reason to leave it looking that way.

I’m sitting on a flattened box in the storeroom of the 7-Eleven where I work. The shift manager doesn’t mind—I’ve been doing it a lot lately. On Thursday, I packed a clean T-shirt, bra, and panties and spent the night. I washed up in the bathroom before school. It was better than being at home—my mother was working through the night, and I just didn’t want to be there.

Honestly, things aren’t good at home. I’m still in the system from when they took me away because she was doing drugs, and they’re supposed to be watching her. If I called, they’d pull me out, but that’s a dice roll as to what would happen next. I heard an expression that the devil you know is better than the one you don’t.

She doesn’t know who my father was. I came about pretty much as soon as she started working her business. She got her tubes tied after me. I guess that’s one smart decision she made.

Honestly, I don’t think my mother is well. For one thing, her thinking is very twisted. Her priorities are so off, even I, at the age of sixteen, know better. And I’m not sure her physical health is good either. She looks like she’s losing weight—even more than when she was taking drugs.

But, for now, I don’t want to get removed from the home again. I like my English teacher, so I’d like to finish tenth grade where I am. She says I’m good at telling stories, and maybe that’s why I’m writing these things. I guess when I write things down, it feels like they don’t own me. And maybe there’s another reason, too…

So, here I am, early for work, sitting in the corner of the 7-Eleven storeroom. I don’t know why, but this feels peaceful to me. I can hear the steady hum of the A/C system and the blowers on the refrigerated displays. The air is warm and heavy with the fermented smell of spilled and forgotten soda. And cardboard—that dry, gluey smell, like when you open a case of chips to put them out on the shelves.

I make minimum wage working here, but the shift managers are nice to me and the work isn’t too bad, so I guess I’ll stay with it and try to keep my grades up so I can make it to eleventh grade.

If I can stick things out with my mother long enough to do that, I’ll feel like I did something. Then I’ll be ready to do something—anything—else.

THIS, THAT, AND SNACKS

Geoni and I are at the Port Isabel Walmart getting things for the studio. Nothing major… some rugs for the sitting/viewing area, a Keurig and microwave for a little break area beside it. And snacks…

What’s a break area without snacks?

The weather today is actually fairly nice—temperature in the mid-70s and partly cloudy. My prayers go out to the people in the central US who are getting blasted by the 2026 Snowpocalypse! Nearly 200 million people are affected by extreme winter conditions.

Props to those of you up north who see 10 inches of snow and shrug it off. I know a lot of people deal with this kind of weather, and more, every day. Nevertheless, this is hitting the central states hard.

I’ll wrap this up and get back to shopping. Then Geoni and I will go to the studio and talk about what furniture to order.

I’ll be back later tonight, as I do, to say good night, so see you then.

GOOD NIGHT

I started the day with Geoni behind the camera and I’m ending it the same way. We had a lot of fun today, but there were some serious discussions, too.

Once our shopping was done, we ended up unrolling the rug and just sitting on it to talk. We reprised the adoption conversation, then the topic changed.

“I want to bring something up,” she said. “Josh has an idea, but he’s worried what others will think.”

“What is it?”

“With us adopting, it makes sense we should get a car for the family. He wants to get a plug-in hybrid Explorer for us.”

“That makes sense.”

Geoni nodded. “And while we’re at it, he wants to just get another car and donate it to AGI. Something to use back and forth from the condos to here.”

“Oh, wow…” I replied. “That’s very generous.”

“His concern is that people will think he’s just… showing off his wealth.”

I thought before I answered. “I can see how he’d worry. I see it as being generous.”

Geoni nodded. “He was like, we could work it all out, but I’d rather not spend time and brain power on it. We have the adoption to think about. I can just buy a car and be done. And move on…”

“I guess that makes sense if you’re Josh,” I said. “And if I can be honest, from what I can tell, he won’t notice the expense.”

Geoni laughed a little. “Family wealth going back to the Industrial Revolution… Ailana… when he married me, there was no prenup. He brought me in equally. Suddenly, my portfolio that I thought was respectable for my age and upbringing was like the icing flowers on a cake… They are a nice touch, but not much compared to the cake!”

“Well, I don’t think anyone is going to think he’s showing off. With the adoption, I get it. It’s better to focus on what’s important.”

“I’ll tell him we talked,” Geoni replied.

So, I’ll close by saying it looks like our car situation with AGI Creative is a step closer to being solved.

May you have the ability to make lives around you better and the willingness to do so.

Good night.

GOOD NIGHT. Hello, again, you two. AGI Creative definitely needs another vehicle. And it will be tax deductible, too! I think another personal vehicle for Geoni and Josh is also an imminent purchase. I think I see where this is going. I hope I am right. I really hope so. Have a good evening, Ailana. I bid you goodnight. 🌙.
