GOOD MORNING

Welcome to Sunday. This is going to be one of those didn’t-you-do-that-before? sorts of days. The plan is pretty straightforward.

Jason, Dad, and I are hitting Denny’s for breakfast, then Dad’s dropping us off for early church. He’ll come back here, drop off the Highlander, swap to his truck, grab Grammy, and meet us at church.

Micah and Jasmine are going to church with his family. The Everetts and Ryans will hop in the Highlander and make it to the early service.

Now, the most astute of you will notice I’m having a muffin BEFORE Denny’s. As a fiction writer, I suppose I could create a plausible explanation. I guess I should tell the truth.

Look at this thing! It’s literally begging to be eaten! How could I say no?

Blame Jasmine—she made the rounds this morning delivering them to everyone. Plot twist—Micah made them! Something about Bisquick and lemon cake mix, add blueberries…

The plan for after church is up in the air, but the first round of text messages leads me to believe it’s going to be every couple for themselves.

I’ll be back later to check in. See you then.

YOUR CALL by Vanessa Lenen

David and I met for a late breakfast at a cafe near the extended-stay hotel where I’ve been living. We went to Saturday night church, so our day is open. He came in a little later than planned, smiling like he’d found something he thought he’d lost.

He kissed me quickly and sat down. “Been a busy week since all that mpox business, hasn’t it?”

I thought that was an odd way to start the conversation. “Sort of. More for you, I’d guess.”

“I have great news. Maybe. It depends on you.”

The non sequitur caught me off guard. “News?”

“About us. About seeing if we’re really going somewhere.”

I decided to slow him down. “How about you get me up to speed? What’s going on?”

“Are you going to take the job in Texas?”

I frowned. “I don’t know… Back to that ‘seeing if we’re going somewhere’ thing…”

“I told you we’d work it out if you wanted to go. I didn’t know how… but I threw out some feelers… I didn’t want to say anything until I knew something.”

“Work it out?”

“How we can keep things going… It’s your call… If you want the job—and I’ve said it sounds perfect… I made some contacts. I haven’t looked at my personal email all week, but I was paying bills and saw the notifications… I have a job offer in Brownsville.”

I interrupted. “You have a job offer? You could’ve said something…”

“I didn’t want to stress you out with maybes… I just found out today… It’s an ER attending position at Valley Baptist Hospital. I’ve been in the Baptist Hospital employment database for a while. When your Texas job came up, I… checked some openings and clicked some ‘send’ buttons… All that.”

I smiled. “You have a job in Brownsville?”

“An offer. If you take the clinic job, I’m going with you.”

“You have a job in Texas!”

Needless to say, this felt like a walk-off home run in the ninth!

ACROSS THE BAY

After church, Jason and I decided to go by the studio. We had no real reason other than to take a few pictures using the lights and backdrops, just to refine the craft and tweak the setup.

After about an hour, we decided to call Kirina and see if she felt like getting a late lunch. She welcomed the invitation, then took us to see her new home.

I’m in the park that her yard connects to. It’s called Arturo Galvan Coastal Park. From her back porch, you can see the bay, and it’s a short walk to the entrance.

The three of us walked along, just chatting. Then Kirina shared a thought.

“I’ll be twenty-six next month, but I honestly feel like I’ve just started being me. Being a performer was… a performance. Last year, I reset myself and grew to the point that I knew I wanted to have friends. Then my mishap at sea dropped me right into your friend group. Would you call it a blessing?”

Jason answered, “I would. Sometimes, we find things we didn’t know we needed until we see them.”

She nodded. “I think I was realizing I needed something, but didn’t know what.”

“Now you have a group of friends that includes Eli, right?”

She smiled. “Things with Eli are amazing. That was another chance encounter that turned out really good for me.”

We walked a moment more, then Jason said, “Can I get in your business a little?”

Kirina said he could, and then he said, “I always think we get blessed just so we know how it feels before it becomes our turn to be a blessing to someone else. What do you think about that?”

We talked about that a little, and Kirina and I both agreed. I wonder what you think about that idea. Let me know…

See you later tonight!

GOOD NIGHT

It’s time that I normally would be ready for bed or close, but tonight things have been different. After we left Port Isabel, Jason and I ran into Micah and Jasmine as they were coming home.

“Bro,” Micah said, “you gotta come help me with leftovers…”

Micah’s family had gathered after church. Let’s just say food was a big part of the event.

He was peeling the foil off of a platter, and Jason’s eyes lit up. “Are those ribs?”

“Yep… There’s slaw, beans… Then there’s grilled bologna and restuffed potatoes. Of course there are deviled eggs…get a plate.

Jasmine chimed in. “…or two plates!”

We listened over our plates as they talked about their day. They shared anecdotes about cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles—all Micah’s.

Jasmine’s father was unknown and she had been removed from her home at age four and put into the foster system. But I could see that Jasmine had come to claim Micah’s family as hers, too.

After a while, the stories waned and Jasmine sighed. “Ailana, I need to tell you something. I’ve been afraid to say anything, but I need to.”

“What’s going on?”

“It’s about Korea… There’s just no way Micah can take off. St. Croix was a stretch. And I don’t want to go without him, unless it’s absolutely required for my job with AGI.

It took me about as long as it takes to blink to realize she was right. “Oh, Jasmine, that’s not a problem at all. You didn’t need to be scared. Of course you don’t have to go.”

She seemed relieved. “I can FaceTime in and you can tell me how I can help. I’ll stay up late or get up early… however the time zones work out.”

We talked about it and I repeated that it just wasn’t a problem. I told her not to worry, and that everything would be fine—and it will.

I suppose I should add that the plan is to leave in a week on the 7th…

May you have the wisdom to see what course is best and the courage to follow it.

Good night.

Be your best you!
