Extra: I GET IT by Emma Knox
Happy morning to ever’body. I thought I’d make a post about the buzz going around at the apartments regarding Shay Ryder.
I guess you’d say it started on Friday when Shay wanted to hang out with Hannah. Normally, Shay’s security guys drive her around and all that, then drop her off and wait—either in the car or they just sit around.
But recently, her security team was told to step things up and stay a lot closer. Shay don’t like that very much, especially on account she’s only been dating Devon for a month.
Now Kent and Izzy know Shay best, and Addison after them. Me and Noah were trying to sort out why all this is going on.
Shay’s dad owns—among other things—Blue Water Express, so snatching his daughter for ransom is a real possibility. But Shay don’t live like a celebrity or anything, so up to now, it’s been okay.
Now, Blue Water Express cooperates with government agencies in a lot of countries. It’s good for business and all. So if, for instance, the UK’s SIS calls and needs to have a box moved 12,000 miles and put into someone's hands, they call Blue Water.
Well, with the state of things in the world—I’ll leave it at that—bumping up security for families like the Ryders just makes sense.
So Shay’s guards have to stay closer. On Saturday, she came to visit Devon, and Conner had to come up to the common room. He explained that Mr. Ryder has a separate corporation just to handle family security called Ryder Family Protective Services Inc. That’s who Eric and the guards work for.
So, Shay wants privacy but she needs to be protected. Merritt come up with a plan. If there happened to be bad guys and they thought Shay was in Florida, they wouldn’t bother her here.
Merritt calls it body doubles. Decoys running around pretending to be Shay and Devon, so as to protect the real Shay without guards sitting on top of her all the time.
So that’s what I know. Hope this helps you get it straight, too.
Chapter 63: WE CAN HELP by Kent Marlon
Yesterday, Merritt hit me up with a plan that could help Shay Ryder with her feeling trapped by all of the security that goes with being the daughter of a mega-rich family. Eric Marten is the head of her security team. Me and him work with a youth basketball program, so after that, we came to the apartments to talk to Merritt about his idea.
“Basically,” Merritt said, “you guys hire some body doubles… Two for her, one for Devon… Then you stage a send-off, and one of the decoy Shays and the fake Devon take off on that motorcycle trip she’s threatening. They drop off the grid, like she did before she came to NYC. Maybe they appear just enough that their names go out… Like, they're in L.A. or something…”
Eric nodded. “Go on…”
“Then the second decoy moves into her house in West Village. The real Shay moves in here. All of us help watch out for her here. That two-bedroom right there is vacant. Shay moves in. The entrances are secure. Easy to watch.”
Eric sat quietly for a long time, but we could tell he was thinking, then he took a breath and smiled. “So, we send her identity off on a fugue. Her body moves in here. There’s a lot to this.”
“What do you think?” I said.
“The second decoy at the house… not so much… A threat would see two decoys and know one of them was fake. They’d look closer to find out which… Probably find out both were.”
Merritt nodded. “That’s solid.”
Eric went on. “Decoys on motorcycles… Cross-country ride… Throw in some hotels to show up on the grid… The identity is on the loose… Shay is safe.”
I looked at Eric. “So what do you think, coach?”
“There’s a lot that has to happen. Cole… the former FBI guy… He started working on how to make her disappear from the document and banking side of things. That ball is rolling. But… you know this is going to impact everyone here. My boss… Mr. Regent… He’ll insist on background checks and that sort of thing. And Devon… His identity hits the road, too. He becomes a ghost…”
“We should talk to him right now,” I said.
Be your best you!
