Chapter 64: IT WOULD WORK by Devon Collier
Last night, I had a very long discussion with Merritt, Kent, and Eric. Merritt came up with a plan so that Shay could feel more independent.
The idea is that the security team hires decoy versions of Shay—and me—to take off on some cross-country motorcycle trip. That is something she’s been talking about doing—something she did after college. Now, Shay and I are talking about the idea and how it affects us.
“It would work,” I said. “You’d move in here. The decoys take our identities and leave. The guards won’t have to sit in the common room. You get your privacy.”
“But I lose my job.”
“Addison came up with a plan for that,” I said.
Shay nodded.
The decoys become us on paper. Shay would quit her job. She doesn’t like it, but Addison’s plan solves that.
Izzy (who works for the same company) takes over—on paper—all of the calls, emails, and communications Shay handles in the office. Kent gets hired ½ time to do the field work meeting volunteers and contractors—which he’s been doing as a volunteer for ages. Izzy and Kent get Shay’s salary…
But Shay actually keeps doing all the office work, just identifying herself as Izzy. Shay keeps doing what is important to her, but it looks like Izzy is working 60 hours a week.
“Addison’s plan would work,” Shay said. “But you get lost in the shuffle. You can’t go back to college… Your work history has a weird gap…”
Tom Jenkins got dragged into this already. He was fine with sending my EFT payroll to a different bank account (there’s a plan for the Shay’s lease, too, but that can come out later). I’d still do the work for Tom. Schooling is the only real problem for me.
“Shay,” I said, “here’s what I think. I love what’s between us. I think you, in some way, need me. And I love being here for you. This decoy idea… Maybe it’s not forever. Maybe we look at it again in a year… but for now, it keeps you safe and gives you some privacy. I say we do it.”Shay smiled. “Devon, I love you.”
I smiled back. “I love you, too.”

Chapter 65: BIG CHANGES by Merritt Gray
When I got home from work today, Noah was in the common room looking at the community snacks in the kitchenette. He saw me, nodded a greeting, then met me at the stairs.
“Shay was here talking to Devon when I got off my shift. The decoy idea was yours?”
I nodded. “If they go through with it, all of us have to be on board.”
He nodded. “Like we’re all part of some big secret plot. The guard… Logan Hastings… He said we’d all have to pass background checks.”
“Eric said since it was my idea to move her here, I’d have to pass… like equal to a security clearance for the government. My boss, Will… he said that would be good in case I ever got on a job with a government contractor. But… yeah… we’re all in.”
Noah motioned at the kitchenette. “You feel like going out for a burger or something? I need to hit a grocery, but I don’t feel like that tonight.”
I nodded. “That sounds good. Let me put on some jeans and change shoes.”
He walked with me toward the dorms, saying, “Does it feel strange to not invite Emma? How long did you two date?”
“Yeah, it’s a little odd. We met in mid-October. I guess we dated two months… Two and a half… If you want to call it dating.”
“You just changed your mind?”
“We agreed. It was like, we took off on a scenic hike together, then got to the first overlook and just stopped. It was great. We just weren’t going anywhere. So… Like we stalled out at a nice place and that was the end of it.”
“You could have stayed where you were… see what happened?”
I nodded. “Well, it didn’t seem like anything was happening. It was a good call.”
Noah nodded. “I get it… And you’re happy?”
“Yeah, we both are. No trauma… Just an ending.”
Be your best you!
