Chapter 73: CAN YOU COME IN? by Hannah Madison
It’s Saturday morning and I’m at work. It’s a little awkward on top of it being the weekend.
I got a text last night just after dinner from one of the engineers in our department. His name is David Stewart. He’s been with the Division of Re-engineering for a couple of years, and Mr. Robertson gives him a lot of responsibility. He is the engineer over the project that had me crawling in the air ducts.
He had to be out a couple of days last week and wanted to know if I could come in today to make sure he was reading my notes from the duct crawl correctly the first time.
“It would be a huge favor to me,” he said.
I agreed, so here I am. It feels a little strange because we are the only two from the division here. He’s also acting a bit awkward, and I hope I’m not reading something into the situation.
He’s late twenties and single. Nice guy. If I stopped to think about it, I’d say he’s handsome. Always, he’s been professional and all-business, and nothing otherwise has happened today.
So, no worries on my part. Just not how I would choose to spend a Saturday.
Chapter 74: PROBABLY OKAY by David Stewart
I had to take a few days off last week to take my mom to some doctor’s appointments. She has CLL, and it was time for follow-ups, which led the doctor to want to redo some tests. Everything came back in acceptable ranges, but now, I’m behind on a project.
The tech who did some data collection and testing on a job site—it's a multistory office building—agreed to come in today to help out. All good… except…
Hannah is a single girl in her mid-twenties. Attractive, to be sure. Professional in every way. She’s definitely going to be a good engineer once she gets licensed.
I thought another engineer—Jason Harris, who’s in the New Construction Division—was going to be here. He changed his plans. So, besides some guys from Tech Support going around doing—not exactly sure what—it’s Hannah and me alone on the floor.
I’m definitely not trying to end up in Mr. Robertson’s office explaining myself today, so I’m being kind of standoffish. We’re getting the work done, but I want to make sure I don’t send any mistaken signals.
It’s a strange world… My grandfather wouldn’t have thought twice about this situation. I’m not saying that was better. I’m sure a lot of exploitation went on. Now, workplace appropriateness is part of every onboarding package. HR requires everyone to review the video training annually.
Anyway, here I am. You can bet I’m being careful.
Chapter 75: VISIT FROM SHAY by Emma Knox
After breakfast, I went to my apartment and studied for a while. When I came back out to the common area after lunch, Shay was here visiting Devon.
Now I’ll say a lot of things are happening regarding that, and Shay seems optimistic about the changes. But they haven’t happened yet, so that guard, Conner, was sitting off by himself watching the TV with one eye and the stairs with the other.
I guess you know I’m not one to see someone alone like that, so I went over. “What are you watching?”
“CSI Season 10 on Hulu,” he said.
“Can I sit with you and watch?”
He said of course, and later he paused the stream while I made popcorn. When I came back we talked a little about Shay’s situation.
“I’m not sure it’s going to be terribly different,” Conner said. “ust more complicated. Eric already has to hire more guards so they can pull the new plan off. And my job totally changes.”
He went on to say that the idea is they’ll bring on a girl guard to actually be Shay’s roommate in the apartment. Conner gets—as he said—detailed to live in the dorm connected to Devon’s room, and he’s on call 24/7.
“So, now she’s basically living with a guard and I’m across the common area and down the hall. The thing is, Merritt’s idea of the decoys should mean any threat won’t be looking in Brooklyn. Which means when Shay wants to go for a walk, she’s not Shay. Just some girl nobody knows.”
“Well,” I said, “she’ll feel different. Maybe she’ll be more satisfied.”
Conner went on to say that she’s supposed to tell the roommate when she’s going somewhere so Eric and the others can know. They’ll still be protecting her, but not from threats to the Ryder family—just regular stuff everyone in NYC faces when they go out.
I said that sounded pretty good. After that, we unpaused CSI. We talked a little as the show played, but mostly about what we were watching.
That’s all for now! See you next time.
Chapter 76: AS IT TURNED OUT by Hannah Madison
I’m back in the apartments now. Happy to report that the day went well.
I mentioned earlier that I was getting a vibe from David Stewart that I couldn’t figure out. He seemed nervous and part of me thought maybe he had ulterior motives for asking me to come to work. Later, I thought maybe I had done some of the work incorrectly and he was upset.
So I did what seemed mature and responsible. “David, is everything okay? You seem unsettled.”
Turns out he was uncomfortable being alone with me in the office. Like I said, he’s good at his job and will probably move up in the company. I assured him I wouldn’t have thought anything if he hadn’t seemed so nervous.
After that, he calmed down and we got all the work done. David left a handwritten note on Mr. Robertson’s desk saying that he and I worked today and got caught up on the project—I thought that added a level of accountability, as well as letting him know we’d caught up.
Then, as we were packing up, he made an offer. “I know I said I was uncomfortable alone in the office, but if I don’t offer to keep you from taking the train, I’ll feel like I was being rude. I drove in today…”
The firm has spaces in a nearby garage that partners and engineers can use, so that made sense.
“…If you want, I’ll drive you to wherever you’re going next.”
I accepted, and we headed for Brooklyn. The only thing remarkable about the ride was a second offer.
“If you’re hungry, I’ll treat you to a late lunch. Drive-through of your choice.”
I accepted. We picked up some burgers, fries, and sodas and ate as he drove.
In the big scheme of things, I’d say today earned me some goodwill with one of the rising stars at NYC SysCo.
Be your best you!
