Chapter 79: ALL SET by Addison Magee
Well today, Crossroads Apartments has all three two-bedroom units rented out. We kinda held off on this last one since almost everyone else living here is connected to The Pay It Forward Society.
This last one goes to Shay Ryder, a friend of us all, and her new roommate, Olivia Medina. Officially, it goes to Olivia and someone I haven’t met named Mara Voss.
BUT!!!!! Fitting for an apartment above a theater, the part of Mara Voss will be played by Shay Ryder!
Bad news, though… Devon Collier officially is moving out. Some guy named Evan Calder is moving into his micro.
BUT!!!!! Also fitting for an apartment above a theater, the part of Evan Calder will be played by Devon Collier.
There’s one more little twist I should mention. The role of Olivia Medina is being played by a girl named Olivia Medina. Shh… it’s top secret!
This one’s confusing, even to a theater person. Olivia in the flesh has IDs and numbers that she was born into. Well, some fancy footwork created alias IDs and numbers for her, but since the name is not unusual, she got to keep her name.
So, Tom’s in on all of this. The lease is backed up with real bank accounts and all that—as if we’re worried that Shay… I mean Mara… LOL! …would be a risk to not pay rent.
Later, I get to execute another lease for another micro… Conner Wiltshire (who will be playing himself in this little drama) is moving into the room connected to the room in which Devon… I mean Evan… LOL! …now lives.
If you are keeping score… Yes, only girls live in the two-bedrooms and only guys live in the micros. That wasn’t planned out in the beginning, but it worked out.
Here’s the config…
In the two-bedrooms, we have Olivia and Shay on the left, Izzy and me at the top, and Hannah and Emma on the right.
In the micros (two of them share a bathroom), Kent and Merritt are in rooms at the top, center. Devon and Conner will share the top, right bathroom. Noah and Jacob share the bottom right bathroom.
That’s probably enough of my nonsense! Stick around, though! The show is just about to start!
Chapter 80: NEXT MOVE by Hannah Madison
I just got home to find a black Tahoe idling outside with Ray Becker at the wheel. He waved as I headed in.
Conner was watching the stairs as I came up. A quick look around and I spotted Shay and a girl I haven’t met standing at the door to the two-bedroom where Shay’s going to live. I deduced—like Sherlock Holmes—that the other girl would be the guard hired to live with her.
I thought I’d confirm my idea, so I sat down with Conner. “Shay’s roommate?”
Conner nodded. “So Ryder Family Protective Services has been busy nonstop. It’s all coming together. Once upon a time, there was an FBI agent named Olivia Medina. We hired her and gave her new IDs… new DL, new social number… Plot twist—her name is still Olivia Medina, which isn’t that uncommon.”
I smiled. “Okay, Olivia is ex-FBI, now working for Ryder…”
Conner shook his head. “Olivia is still FBI, attached to Ryder in a taskforce role. We get a supercop. They get inside intel in the event that there’s a zombie apocalypse event related to Shay. Basically, Mr. Ryder had Mr. Regent leverage a favor so Shay has a roommate with formidable skills.”
“Supercop?”
“She was on her way to an FBI tactical unit. Now, she’s running a dropship business and keeping her eyes open for zombies.”
“‘Zombies’ is codeword for threats?”
Conner laughed. “I’m just saying that… it’s not official.”
“It could be,” I replied.
Shay and Olivia went inside the apartment. Conner gestured to the backgammon board, I nodded, and we started a game.
“So,” Conner said, “the last bit of the plan is that the decoys and the protectees swap identities. Shay will get IDs and docs from the girl decoy, Mara Voss. Devon becomes the guy decoy, Evan Calder. The outcome is that Shay and Devon’s identities are swapped with the decoy’s, so when the real Shay takes a walk in Brooklyn, it’s Mara Voss, not Shay.”
We finished the backgammon game before I fully understood. It’s a plan, and Shay should be happier.
“Oh…” Conner added. “I’m moving in here. Sharing a bathroom with Devon… Evan…”
I smiled. “Well, welcome to the neighborhood.”
