GOOD MORNING FROM GANGNEUNG
Waking up on Friday the 13th! So far, no bad luck, and I’m planning on keeping it that way!
We are leaving Gangneung and heading back toward Seoul. I worked on my bear conservation article a little and organized my notes. I can probably get two or three pieces out of the day’s research.
The bears, of course, will be one. But the native plant restoration can be a standalone piece, too. I think I can get another one out of the park service details and its programs.
II’ll think about whether there can be more, of course. That makes yesterday a nice return on investment, if you ask me.
We’ll end up in Seoul by the end of the day. I have no idea where we’ll be between now and then, but I’ll check in from somewhere.
See you then!
ODAESAN NATIONAL PARK
We are on our way back to Seoul, but probably not by the most direct route. Geoni saw something on Google Maps, so we decided to make a stop.
We are at the Odaesan National Park Jingogae Walking Trail, and I’m about one minute away from running back to the car to get my coat. This one’s on me! I can’t even blame the photographers for my bad choice.
Odaesan National Park’s Jingogae Walking Trail is one of those quiet, soul-settling mountain paths that make you slow down without being told to. It winds through high forest ridges where the air feels cleaner, cooler, and just a little lighter in your lungs.
The trail is known for gentle elevation, tall Korean fir and birch trees, and long views that open between the trunks like windows into layers of blue mountains. It’s not about rushing to a summit—it’s about rhythm. Footsteps, breath, wind in the branches. Places like this remind me that nature doesn’t perform for us—we’re the visitors, learning how to move softly through someone else’s home.
From here, we’re going to find something for lunch. All along the roads are wonderful little places, each with their own flair. The plan is to drive until we find one that calls out to us!
I’ll check in again once we get to Seoul. Possibly from the hotel, or maybe from dinner. Not sure yet, so check back to find out what ends up happening.
GOOD NIGHT FROM INCHEON
We made a call on the way back from the east. We changed our reservations to a hotel closer to the airport. That will make our departure on the 15th easier.
We are at the Grand Hyatt Incheon, which as you see, has a pool. (The other two hotels had pools as well.) I thought I’d have a bit of a soak before going to my room.
Props to Jason for this awesome picture! Right?
I feel like I should comment on how a content-creation work trip has felt now that I finally grew up enough to say “yes” to Jason. Honestly, it felt much like the trips that came before. That probably means two things.
One, we have jobs to do and we do them. Boring answer.
Two… Okay, hear me out… Since THIS trip feels about the same as the Everglades trip and the US-41, Mississippi River odyssey you can probably conclude the same thing I concluded.
I should have grown up a lot sooner.
And with that thought, I’ll close this post.
May you know now the things you need to know so that you can move quickly into the future God has planned for you.
Good night.
NEW CHAPTER by Anika Kumar
Hello, friends. It feels good to sit down and write to you from a place that finally feels like ours.
The honeymoon with Amir was wonderful—restful, joyful, and just what we needed after the whirlwind of wedding events. But now we’re back to real life, and we’ve settled into our new apartment in Port Isabel at Bay Island Apartment Homes. Every time I look out at the water, I have to pause and remind myself that this is home now.
We’re already deep into clinic planning. Min had a moment a little while back that really opened our eyes. A tourist tried to get Min to translate for a Spanish-speaking woman. Min does not speak Spanish and couldn’t understand her. She felt terrible. Honestly, so did I when she told me.
Amir and I hadn’t fully considered how essential Spanish-speaking staff would be here. We knew it mattered in theory—but this made it real. We’re grateful that Vanessa is conversant in Spanish, especially in a medical context, which is such a gift. Still, that’s not enough.
All the same, the three of us—Min, Amir, and I—are going to sit down soon and talk seriously about staffing needs and how we can serve everyone who walks through our doors.
The facility Min selected—the former dental surgery center—is perfect. Truly. The layout, the rooms, the infrastructure—it feels like it was waiting for this. We’re in the early stages of converting it into the clinic, and it’s exciting to see it slowly take shape.
We don’t have an opening date yet. Three of the four grants are approved and final. We’re waiting on one more—but more on that later.
For now, we build.
Be your best you!
