Chapter 84: GETTING CLOSE by Kent Marlon
I had a little break in my day, so came by the apartments to grab a late lunch. I ran into Devon who was pretty much doing the same thing. We sat down, and I asked how he was feeling about Shay moving in.
“I think she’ll be happier,” he said. “If nothing else, at least she’ll be here with people and not alone in that big house.”
“How about you, though? It’s a big change…”
Devon nodded and shrugged. “Basically, I’m swapping wallets with the guy… Evan. On paper, I’m heading out with Shay, so in a week or so, Tom will hire Evan… As Addison says, Evan-played-by-Devon… So, I keep doing my work for Tom, but the money goes into my new bank account under Evan’s name.”
“So only you have the bank cards and all the passwords,” I said.
“Right,” Devon replied. “And state-issued duplicates of his licenses and IDs. And he gets dups of mine. His pay goes into an account in my name. My pay goes into his. Essentially, the same for Shay and the girl… Mara.”
“Okay… so how are Mara and Evan supposed to end up living here?”
“On paper, Evan and Mara went to Chicago for a job interview, which they did. They both have a background in security logistics, so that makes sense. They arrived separately, then left together for Brooklyn.”
I nodded. “This is where they got hired by Olivia…”
“Right… They checked into separate hotels for a few nights, then Mara moved in here. Olivia is registered as the creator of the drop-ship business… Best Price Office… Mara and Evan got added to the paperwork. That’s the paper trail, should anyone look.”
“Why would anyone look?” I asked.
“There’s no reason. They should be looking at the decoys…” Devon looked over toward Olivia and Shay’s apartment. “Have you met Olivia?”
“She seems nice,” I said. “Maybe a little serious, but it could just be her being new here.”
“Yeah…”
“And you’re getting trained as a private guard?”
“I am, but it will go on Evan’s ID. Otherwise, it would look like I’m not off on the road trip.”
“Yeah, you can’t be in two places at once…”
Devon laughed. “Not according to the paper trail…”
Chapter 85: YOUR IDEA? by Merritt Gray
On Monday, Olivia Medina moved in here at Crossroads Apartments. Tonight when I got home, she was standing by the window in the common area, so I thought I’d introduce myself.
“So I was told,” she said, “that the whole decoy idea was yours.”
I shrugged. “I thought the idea of Shay dragging Devon out on a road trip just so she could have some privacy was iffy. I said send body doubles and she could hide out here with fewer guards. Eric and your company ran with it. It’s a lot more complicated than I imagined.”
She smiled. “Fundamentally, it’s a good idea, though. Call it a tactical deception with decoys, and you’re working for a high-dollar security firm.”
“I suppose. I just know you never find what you’re looking for if you’re looking in the wrong place. I didn’t think about the risk to the Decoys.”
“They know what they’re doing,” she said. “And the whole Ryder security firm has their backs. Frankly, Mara says it should be fun, once she and Evan figure out how to pretend to be dating.”
We talked about that a little while, and tried to imagine what it would be like. We decided they only had to put on a show when they were in public.
“And you,” I said, “are Shay’s closest protector now…”
“It will be interesting. We met Monday night. She seems nice. A little…”
I finished the idea. “She says she’s awkward around people when she’s being nice about it.”
Olivia nodded. “So Sunday is the big switch. Saturday is my last day off the leash.”
“Well,” I said, “you can see everyone here is pretty friendly. You shouldn’t be too bored.”
She nodded, then laughed. “Spontaneous idea… You should go to dinner with me Saturday… my last day of freedom…”
I looked at her and could tell she meant it. “You know it’s Valentine’s Day?”
“No pressure… We split the check.”
I laughed. “You’re talking to a guy from Atlanta. My dad and all my uncles would have my head if I split the check on Valentine’s day.”
She seemed to like that answer. “Okay… suit yourself.”

Message to Paying Supporters:
By now, you may have noticed that there is a new collection called Borrowed Lives. This collection will feature the activities of Evan and Mara.
I am including this chapter in that collection because it contains some foundational information about them. In the future events that do not include them will only be in The Chosen collection. But events that include them will be in both.
My reasoning is that you may wish to check in on what Evan and Mara are doing, so having all of their chapters in a dedicated collection will make doing that easier. At the same time, they are part of The Chosen, so their activities will be in that collection as well.
Thank-You:
It is my belief that most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. I am honored and greatly moved.
I know that I share a LOT of content FREE TO ALL. I'd imagine that you understand why. The stories about giving back and helping seem like they shouldn't be exclusive. Certain plot moments need to be understood by anyone trying to to follow the stories.
With that in mind, I always consider you, the paid members, when deciding how to share content.
My hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!
Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet connectivity fees) AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month. Every supporter is helping!
