LIFE TOGETHER by Hayes Markel

I’m sitting here, happy and scared all at once.

Roman and I both worked throughout most of today. We wanted to get everything done today so that we could enjoy all of Saturday here in Bora Bora without the need to do any work.

“Let’s try Le Corail tonight… What do you think?”

I agreed, so when I knocked off the last of my to-dos, I went to my villa and changed. I had just finished dressing when Roman knocked.

“Ready?”

I was, and we walked to the restaurant making small talk. The waiter had just brought our tea to the table and taken our orders when Roman seemed to get nervous.

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

“I’ll know in a minute…” He smiled and laughed a little.

“What?”

“This past June you walked into my office and moved into my life. For a long time, I pretended I admired you only for your many professional qualities, but we both know the truth.”

My heart was pounding. Roman isn’t one to make flowery speeches, so I was paying attention.

“Since you left LDM, nothing has seemed the same. I realized that everything about life is always better when you are part of it. I can get by alone, but I’d rather not. I want you in my life more, not less.”I don’t know where his hand had been before, but suddenly it was on the table, palm up, with a Cartier ring box open and in it, a diamond solitaire shined.

“Hayes, will you marry me? We’ve wanted this all along. I hope you will agree that now’s the time to act on our feelings.”

I paused to let the sound of those words replay in my mind. I wanted to lock them in so that I’d never forget.

I held out my hand as he took the ring from the box. “Yes. We’ve wanted this all along. It’s time we act on our feelings.”
