GOOD MORNING

Hayes and I are on our way to Dubai by way of a short stopover in Memphis—and on our way to a life together by way of a marriage we agreed we needed.

I was thinking about it when we talked about planning for her to travel with me. She said it—like she was saying we should make sure to pack charging cables.

“Marry me and we can save on hotel rooms,” she said.

There was no drama about it. It was just an acknowledgment that life together would be better than it is apart. We moved into her statement as if we had agreed on it long ago.

In the days between her saying that and my putting the ring on her finger, the idea was latent within us. It came up in things we said over the next few days.

“When we get married…”

“After the wedding…”

“Once we’re married…”

I had to hustle to get a ring sized and shipped. Not every seller can pull off international shipping to Bora Bora. I found one that could.

I was nervous when I asked. I guess that’s normal, but on the other hand it seemed like we had already agreed. But I wanted to do it in a way that would be meaningful.

Dinner at a nice place… A formal ask… Waiting for her to say yes…

And she did.

We are flying back to Memphis and into a future with each other. My only regret is how long I waited to make this happen.
