Chapter 90: STARTING NOW by Mara Voss

Evan and I are at Shay’s house in Manhattan—West Village, to be exact.

We came over from Brooklyn with most of the people living at Crossroads Apartments. Shortly, Evan and I will ride away, and Shay and Devon will go back with them.

We’ve already changed into our ride-off outfits, leaving Devon and Shay dressed as we were when we arrived. I’d lie if it wasn’t borderline freaky to stand there together.

There was some vapid chatting to start with, then Evan asked Devon a question. “So, how do you feel about quitting your job… postponing college? You’re making a big sacrifice.”

Devon took Shay’s hand. “I’m willing to try this so Shay can get some relief. You do things that you think will benefit people you love, right?”

“That’s good,” Evan replied.

“It’s not forever,” Shay added.

“Do you mean something specific?” I asked.

Devon answered. “Call this Phase One. Road trip… See things…”

“What’s Phase Two?” Evan asked.

Devon went on. “Later… at some point we… you guys come back. It gets tricky… Mara lives here as Shay… Evan… not sure where you live, but on some days, we do some secret agent thing and you go back to being you and I go to class. Then, after class we swap again and you go back to being Devon.”

I looked at Devon. “Go back to the part where I live here?”

“Yeah,” Devon said. “After the road trip… There’s no solid plan, but you’d go on being Shay. After the trip, she comes home.”

“And I live here… In this house.”

If you’re new to this story, Shay’s house is a historic $30 million West Village landmark townhouse on Bank Street. Just for context…

“Naturally,” Shay replied.

I looked at Devon. “Phase Two, then… That will make the saddle sores a lot easier to put up with!”

Nothing much significant happened after that conversation—not until me and a guy I first met on the 6th got on the bikes and headed south pretending to be Shay Ryder and her boyfriend, Devon Collier.

Watch for updates. This should be interesting!

Chapter 91: IT’S OFFICIAL by Hannah Madison

Picture this…

The heiress of a bazillionaire is freed from the tight oversight of constant security guard presence. She’s relieved and happy. Her driver—for the last time—loads up the black Tahoe with the guests from the party that portrayed a send-off for her and her boyfriend—the decoys.

What does the heiress want to do on the way to her new life?

“Can we swing through a drive-through and get chicken nuggets? I didn’t eat anything at the party.”

So began Shay’s new life as Mara Voss—a regular girl trying to make a living helping her roommate run an online dropship business.

Nuggets…

We got back to Crossroads and divvied up the drive-through haul. I sat with her—Devon and Merritt sat with us.

Olivia—Shay’s new roommate and security guard—sat with Noah and Emma close to the top of the stairs. I feel like she’s going to be in that spot a lot.

Months ago, when I first volunteered to do some work for Habitat Housing, Shay reached out to me socially. We talked a few times. Texted a few times. Hung out a few times. Looking back, I think I could have done more to be a friend to her.

Since Merritt came up with the body double idea, I’ve grown in my understanding that Shay Ryder—Mara Voss when we’re out and about—has lived far more alone than she wanted to.

Moving in here, she’ll probably feel crowded! Addison took notes in the Tahoe about what Shay likes for breakfast.

“Favorite muffin? What kind of syrup on your pancakes? Meat omelets or veggies only?”

Shay seemed delighted.

“Tomorrow is omelet day! Noah’s off, and he’s in charge of the veggies! Merritt is on egg duty. Shay, you’re gonna love living with us.”

I’m pretty sure Addison is right.

Chapter 92: FIRSTS by Mara Voss

A few hours ago, Evan and I left West Village and pointed the BMWs south. The only plan was to get on US-9 and ride until we got to this motel. Here, we’ll spend our first night as Shay and Devon.

We had reserved rooms here under their names. According to the myth, this is where they last—for a while—used their bank account cards to pay for anything. For the next few days, it’s going to be cash and pre-paid debit cards only. No advance reservations. Pay as we go.

Even though there are no known threats to the people we are pretending to be, there’s a not-zero chance someone trying to harm Shay would know we’re here. Our employer feels like it’s barely not-zero, and Evan and I are not helpless should something—however unlikely—happen.

He walked me to the door. I’m supposed to be his girlfriend. In the story we’re living, we started dating on New Year’s Day. It was time for our first goodnight.

He set my backpack inside the room then took my hands. I moved into his embrace. We know we are acting. And we know it will be complicated.

“Okay… here goes nothing.” His words were whispered and maybe a little shaky. “Ready?”

I looked up. He looked down. I think the director of the play we’re living in would have approved of our first kiss. It was soft and lingered long enough to seem convincing.

I leaned out and smiled. He hugged me again, then let go and backed away.

“7:30 a.m.?” he asked.

“See you then. I’m thinking omelettes…”

“Sounds good.”

I came inside, locked up the room, and was just about to get in bed when my phone buzzed. It was Evan texting.

Evan: “Nice kiss. I didn’t mind it all. You okay?”

Me: “Didn’t mind it either. I’m fine. We got this.”

First day. First night. First kiss. Done. Phase One of being Shay Ryder is underway!

Stick around… This should be interesting.
