MIDDLES by Cindi Curtis

I woke up before the alarm for no justifiable reason. There comes a point when you just have to concede. You are awake.

Actually, it was a peaceful wake-up. As I lay here, there was a growing awareness that I was not asleep. Outside, I could hear birds. The heater kicked on.The heater kicked on. My eyes opened to the darkness, and the gray walls of the unlit room appeared. (They are actually sort of off-white, but in the dark they look gray.)

Today is Wednesday, the middle of the week. I am in the middle of a work project. It’s sort of the middle of the time between when Michael and I set a wedding date and the wedding. I’m more or less in the middle of the air mattress.

Just a few middles that my mind has identified as I have been negotiating with myself about getting up and hitting the showers!

Now, can I make any sort of meaningful point? Let’s try this…

Isaiah 40:31—“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (ESV)

I think being between point A and point B frustrates us, and we want to rush into things. I think we try to get out of the middle and move quickly to the end.

Sure, there’s a lot of satisfaction in finishing things. But we should finish them well and as they are meant to be. Skipping the process probably isn’t going to be best.

I don’t think anyone would watch an hour of a two-hour movie, then skip to the last ten minutes with the expectation of understanding what happened. Why would we (using a week as a metaphor) get to Wednesday and think we could just skip to Sunday?

So, consider the words of Isaiah. Wait on the Lord.
