GOOD MORNING

A few minutes ago, Jason was tapping on the door to my stateroom. I was awake, mostly. From beyond the door he whispered words that had me scrambling for the nearest blanket.

“I made cheese toast. It will be done in like two minutes.”

Yeah, he’s amazing. And (for the handful of women followers reading this) he’s not available.

Today’s journey continues across the gulf. Primarily, we’ll be offshore, but we’re gradually angling back toward the coast. We have steady winds and temperatures around 80°F (27°C).

Like yesterday, I’ll work some this morning, then we’ll do some brainstorming and hanging out through the afternoon. Jasmine and I are making dinner for everyone.

Now I’m about to attack this cheese toast and savor some coffee. I’ll be back later, so see you then.

SUN LOUNGING

This is where I sat for last night’s goodnight post. It is called the sun lounge. It’s on the upper level and is aft of the helm.

Clay and Micah are at the helm talking about Swim Fit and watching the autopilot. Micah was trying to better understand Clay’s ideas, and I was eavesdropping.

“So,” Micah said, “you’ll have a small-scale production factory where the swimsuits are made. SwimFit provides the materials and equipment. The workers do whatever cutting is needed and then assemble the suits.”

“Exactly,” Clay replied. “The factory will be a separate company. We’re thinking of Southeast Texas Apparel as a working title. It receives the materials and invoices SwimFit for completed goods.”

“And you want me to be the liaison between SwimFit and the factory?” Micah shook his head.

“You’d be on the SwimFit payroll, but you’d give the orders. We’ll start small—maybe ten people at first.”

“And you think I can do that?”

Clay nodded. “I do. We can talk more about the details, once you convince yourself you’ll give it a try.”

“Okay… what next?”

Clay pointed at the navigation console. “We need to change course. We’ll have to reset some of the lines but nothing drastic. With this wind, we can pick up a knot or so if we change heading a little.”

I’m sure you’re as interested in all this as I am! I’ll get Clay and Sasha to provide a full report before we get too far into this trip!

For now, I need to reapply sunscreen and settle in for a little more doing nothing! I’ll be back later, so see you then!

DOUBLE DUTY by Vanessa Lenen

Open for business, and I’ve got two hats to wear. One is admin. I get to do grant paperwork and make sure the insurance companies are happy. The other is clinical field work.

Mainly, I’ll be in the field doing work on a major vaccination study. It might not be exactly what you think.

When people hear that I’m working on a vaccination study, they sometimes imagine something complicated happening in a laboratory somewhere. In reality, most of the work happens in ordinary places—apartment complexes, senior housing, and nursing homes—places where a lot of people live close together.

Our program is called the RISE Residential Immunization Program. The idea is simple. We provide free routine checkups and recommended vaccinations for residents who choose to participate. In return, we track anonymized health data over time so we can better understand how vaccination levels affect the spread of contagious illnesses inside dense residential communities.

What we are studying isn’t just whether or not vaccines work. What we’re looking at is how vaccination coverage changes the behavior of diseases inside a community.

For example, when an illness appears in a building or complex, we measure two things. First, how long it persists—does it burn out quickly, or does it circulate for weeks? Second, how far it spreads—does it remain within one hallway or building, or does it move through the whole complex?

We then compare those patterns to the percentage of residents who are vaccinated.

Our hypothesis is straightforward: higher vaccination percentages should reduce both the duration and the distance of outbreaks.

But the most interesting question is where the curve begins to level off. In other words, at what vaccination percentage do diminishing returns start to appear? Is it seventy percent? Eighty? Higher?

Understanding that threshold could help public health teams focus resources where they matter most—protecting communities while using vaccination programs as efficiently as possible.

GOOD NIGHT

This post almost didn’t happen. After almost two years, I almost forgot to make a post.

A few minutes ago, I got a text from Sasha: “Did you do your ‘good night’ post?”

Me: “Yikes! Send a camera!”

A dozen or so seconds later, I heard a tapping on the door.

“Come in.”

From the other side, Jason’s voice. “Are you covered up?”

I double-checked the blankets. “I am now.”

He slowly opened the door, camera in hand. “Sasha sent me.”

Hit the pause button on the story. Internal monologue time.

There is no telling how often Jason has seen me in bathrobes or wrapped in blankets. Cheese toast this morning, for instance. But for reasons I cannot explain, this felt different.

Maybe it was that I was in bed, ready to sleep. It has been, for most of my life, my habit to sleep (as Sasha calls it) a la sans (which she claims translates to “in the manner of without”). I think that the idea of sleeping is private whereas the idea of cheese toast is not.

I also think I’m trying to make sense of the pervasive feeling of embarrassment.

Back to the story. Hand over my face, I heard the shutter sound.

“Cute,” Jason said. “Is that what you want to go with?”

I peeked through my fingers. The camera clicked again.

Finally, I just put my hand down and tried to smile normally

Jason backed up a step. “I’ll send you the pics. Good night.”

He backed out and closed the door.

Now, I’m thinking about how it will be on the honeymoon. I will mentally prepare!

May you discover things that surprise you and cause you to grow into new areas of awareness, becoming a fuller version of yourself as you do.

Good night.

Be your best you!

Thank-You Message to Paying Supporters:

Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet connectivity fees) AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month. Every supporter is helping!

I fully believe that most of you who help with the costs do so because you want to support the creative process and offer encouragement. I’m honored by that and genuinely moved.

I realize that I share a lot of content free to everyone. I imagine most of you understand why. The stories about giving back and helping others feel like they shouldn’t be locked behind a pay-wall, and some plot moments need to remain accessible for anyone following the larger narrative.

With that in mind, I always keep you—the paid members—in mind when deciding how to share things.

I hope that reserving a few photos and small sections of each post for you serves as a modest expression of my gratitude.

Again, thank you very, very much.

GOOD MORNING. Good morning, Ailana. Although I prefer cinnamon toast , I understand supplies are limited, so cheese toast is just fine. And he made it? For you? I laugh when you tell the women readers "he's not available". No surprise there. Thanks for the weather. Steady winds and 80° sounds great. Course I hope for calm waters, too. Good luck for progress working and thanks for the photos and morning post.

SUN LOUNGING. I see that you have calm waters. Thumbs up. Thanks for the detail about the lounge. Great vantage point. Have we seen you in a one piece before? I guess doing watersports with SwimFit maybe. You look good here. Keep that suit. Ask Jason. Bet he agrees. Of course you are eavesdropping. Probably can't help it, there. And, yes, for us detail readers, you know that we'll want to know, um, details. So, Clay and Sasha, you're up later. Thanks for the post and the photos. Um, happy trails?

DOUBLE DUTY by Vanessa Lenen. RISE is an impressive program, Vanessa. Hope you guys can get everything funded and running. One thing, I hope one of your talents is making sure clients tell you the truth. That program sometimes deals with potentially embarrassing questions. So, good luck. I agree with you these are all valid questions that need accurate answers. Again, good luck with your work. Thanks for your post.
