Chapter 39: FOCUSED APPROACH by Merritt Gray

As I passed by his office, Will Robertson waved to me, rose from his desk, and came to meet me.

“Couple of things… Do you know where Hannah is?” he asked.

“Train to Long Island,” I replied.

“Could you call her? I need her on this, too.”

I called and told her she was on speakerphone.

Mr. Robertson said, “I talked to Tom Jenkins yesterday, and NYC SysCo is going to do the engineering for his apartment expansion. He said you know about it already. I’m going to be principal on the project, but I need you two to be boots on the ground. A lot of it will be taking the blueprints for where you live and moving the lines around to fit the space in the new building. That means the majority of the work will be cut-and-paste, then modified to the new site. Does that make sense?”

I answered. “In concept, yes.”

He went on. “The micros were put together with one-piece shower/tub units… all-in-one sink/vanity units. That’s the starting point. You’ll just be fitting the existing plans into the new space.”

Then Hannah said, “It makes sense. We’ll match up what’s already been done with what’s available in the new space.”

“Demo starts Monday. I want you two on site in case anything comes up that I need to weigh in on. You can work on your laptops. Since you already worked with David Stewart, send everything to him for a quick look and he’ll pass it on to me. I’m fully confident you can handle this.”

“Thank you very much,” I said.

“Any thoughts?” he asked.

“You know Liza is doing an internship in new construction, but this would be a great thing for her to see,” I said. “Like she could journal the whole process for her portfolio. Day one… sledge hammers… Day 30 trim paint…”

Mr. Robertson nodded. “Let’s make that happen… Great plan.”

Hannah said goodbye and I asked if there was anything else.

“Nothing else on this, but… You might be interested… Your calculus teacher is working on a new book series.”

“Really?”

“Matter of fact, we talked on the phone last night about ideas. I think she’s getting ready to start outlining soon.”

Thank-You Message to Paying Supporters:

Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet connectivity fees) AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month. Every supporter is helping!

I fully believe that most of you who help with the costs do so because you want to support the creative process and offer encouragement. I’m honored by that and genuinely moved.

I realize that I share a lot of content free to everyone. I imagine most of you understand why. The stories about giving back and helping others feel like they shouldn’t be locked behind a pay-wall, and some plot moments need to remain accessible for anyone following the larger narrative.

With that in mind, I always keep you—the paid members—in mind when deciding how to share things.

I hope that reserving a few photos and small sections of each post for you serves as a modest expression of my gratitude.

Again, thank you very, very much.

Chapter 39: FOCUSED APPROACH by Merritt Gray. Hey Merritt. How's it going? Really?!? Now, why would he tell you he talked to your past teacher? On the phone? At night? After working hours? Hmmm. Oh! I'm sure your project will be fine. He's the principal. But. Great idea to include Liza! Great idea! He already said send everything to David. Melissa should probably, generally at least be aware of this plan. Why would he tell you that? He didn't have to, of course. It's almost as though...almost as though, he's asking for your blessing. Have a good day, sir. Thank you for a most interesting update.
