Chapter 46: MUSIC CITY by Mara Voss

The Ryder Family Protective Services security team dropped us off at a hotel where our motorcycles were waiting for us. Evan checked with the team leader before they left.

“Last words?”

“Have fun. Stay safe. Be reasonable about what you spend.”

With that, we mounted the BMWs and headed off as just plain Evan and Mara that no one in the world should be looking for. I followed Evan without knowing where we were going. At a light, he pulled up Maps on his iPhone.

Now we’re at Victory Park, right beside the Tennessee State Capitol building. We’re just hanging out.

“I’m not sure I want to do a four-hour blast through cool air at 60 MPH again,” Evan said. “We could hotel hop around Nashville until the temps warm up some.”

“Sounds like a plan. Maybe we hit Chattanooga next? See Rock City and all that.”

“Also sounds like a plan,” Evan replied.

We walked around, trying to find different views for pictures with the Capitol building behind us.

Evan had a thought. “So, hear me out. Suppose some super-smart bad guys are looking for Shay. She disappears from Georgia. They hack phone records and realize Shay had ties to the folks in Brooklyn, so they check back there…”

“Will there be zombies?” I asked.

He laughed and went on. “They notice that two of the people there have also disappeared, but suddenly turn up in Nashville. They say, ‘Aha! Shay and Devon borrowed names from people in Brooklyn! They’re traveling as Mara and Evan!’ See what I mean?”

I leaned into him and put my arm around his waist. “I have a different question…”

“What’s that?”

“Are we pretending to be dating or pretending to not be dating? I can’t remember where we left off before we went to the compound.”

I could feel his hand pull me closer. “I have a thought about that.”

I felt a catch in my breath—this could be bad news… or it could be good. “What is it?”

“How about we just stop pretending altogether?”

Chapter 47: PIZZA FOR FOUR by Merritt Gray

I got a text on the train on the way home from Devon.

“Hey… Pizza tonight?”

I don’t know who I’m at dinner with, but it is definitely not Shay Ryder and Devon Collier. And as of a few days ago, it isn’t Evan Calder and Mara Voss, either.

Officially, the only person I know here is Olivia.

But whoever these people are, they’re good company.

Okay… It is way not my place to say, but I’m going to say it anyway.

The girl who is definitely not Shay or Mara has really changed since Christmas. Before then, I’d say she was characteristically nervous and awkward. Sweet, kind, smart, and thoughtful to be sure, but it never seemed like she could just go with the flow.

She always seemed to be trying to remember what the right thing to say was. Does that make sense?

Don’t get me wrong… She still backtracks in her conversations sometimes. She seems to second-guess what she’s saying and more so how she’s saying it.

But in my opinion, the combination of dating the guy who definitely is not Devon or Evan, along with moving into Crossroads, has changed her drastically.

She seems, finally, at peace.

Be your best you!

Chapter 47: PIZZA FOR FOUR by Merritt Gray. Hey Merritt. Thanks for your post. Yes. Shay has changed. I think being around warm, friendly people has cemented the comfort and ease that Devon first brought about. Olivia seems comfortable all you, too. Thanks for your update, sir. Enjoy your pizza.
