LIFE AS ME by Brooklyn McKenna

Well, after I crashed out about the managers at work not being prepared for the spring break crowds, I thought I should calm down and try a different approach.

I’m Brooklyn—but everyone just calls me Brooks.

I grew up on South Padre Island, which means I’ve spent most of my life around sand, wind, sunburns, and tourists asking where beach access is—even when they’re literally standing on the beach. My parents say I learned how to swim before I learned how to ride a bike.

I’m a sophomore at Port Isabel High School, home of the Tarpons. During the school year I’m usually bouncing between classes, student council stuff, and whatever random event someone convinced me to help with.

There aren’t that many people at the high school who actually live on South Padre Island. We’re not automatically friends or anything, but we know who’s who. If someone says they’re from the island, you usually recognize the name, or at least the family.

Most of us come from pretty normal working families. My dad is a captain for a charter fishing company operating out of Port Isabel, and my mom works at the front desk of a condo rental agency on the island. A lot of the other island kids have parents who work in restaurants, hotels, fishing charters, or places that deal with tourists. That’s just how life works here.

Most afternoons, you’ll probably find me behind the counter at Whataburger, handing out burgers and fries to half the island.

Working there is actually pretty fun. You meet people from everywhere—families on vacation, spring breakers, fishermen who’ve been up since 4 a.m., and locals who come in so often I already know their order before they say it.

My friends joke that if you want to know what’s happening on the island, you just ask the girl at the fry station.

Which… might be why my Snapchat handle is FryGirlBrooks.

Anyway, that’s me. Just another island kid trying to survive school, tourists, and the occasional shift where the milkshake machine decides it’s had enough of life.

Be your best you!

Thank-You Message to Paying Supporters:

It is my belief that most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. I am honored and greatly moved.

I know that I share a LOT of content FREE TO ALL. I'd imagine that you understand why. The stories about giving back and helping seem like they shouldn't be exclusive. Certain plot moments need to be understood by anyone trying to to follow the stories.

With that in mind, I always consider you, the paid members, when deciding how to share content.

My hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!

Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet connectivity fees) AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month. Every supporter is helping!

Again, thank you very, very much.
